SAN FRANCISCO – University of San Francisco men's basketball head coach
Kyle Smith, is pleased to announce the addition of Bill Cartwright and Mike Legarza to new coaching positions with the team. Cartwright, a member of the USF Athletic Hall of Fame, will be named a special assistant, while Legarza will serve as the human development coach.
Cartwright, who played for USF from 1975-79, immediately became a standout for the Dons as he posted one of the most impressive statistical records of any USF athlete. During his tenure, Cartwright led the Dons to the No. 1 ranking in the nation and an 80 percent winning percentage, including two conference titles and four post-season appearances. He still holds the USF all-time career scoring record and is ranked No. 1 in field goals and No. 3 in rebounding. Cartwright's size, shooting ability and strength made him college basketball's best big man and a hit in the NBA.
"Having Bill Cartwright as a special assistant will be a tremendous asset to our program," said second year head coach
Kyle Smith. "He will help foster leadership for our staff and more importantly, our student-athletes. Bill is a role model for all USF students and alumni."
Cartwright, who returned to USF after a successful 16-year career in the NBA, already serves as the Director of University Initiatives. In his role, he helps develop connections with USF alumni and the San Francisco community, assist the Office of Development with raising funds, and mentor students from underrepresented groups
As the special assistant for the men's basketball team, Cartwright will be a liaison to Coach Smith, advisor to men's basketball, participate in permissible activities related to men's basketball, assist the development office and athletics department with men's basketball initiatives, and serve as a mentor to all USF men's basketball coaches and staff.
"Bill's experiences as a former student-athlete, professional player, professional coach and six-time World Champion will provide wisdom for our program as we grow and improve," added Smith. "No one has more passion for the educational and athletic experience at USF than Bill."
Legarza is a longtime basketball coach and entrepreneur. He is currently the Director of Legarza Basketball Camps, which is the largest day basketball camp in the country in which over 100,000 players have attended. Legarza also wrote coaching curriculum for the Positive Coaching Alliance at Stanford University. These coaching techniques have been taught in all 50 states to over three million youth athletes.
A former college basketball coach, Legarza was named the California Community College State Coach of the Year. In March 2012, Legarza was inducted into the California Community College Coaches Hall of Fame. That same year, he was also inducted into the Reno High School Athletic Hall of Fame as basketball and football athlete.
"Mike is one of the most respected people in the world of leadership and leadership studies," said Smith. "He has a background in coaching and mentoring that is second to none. He has worked with developing positive coaching paradigms at elite universities as well as blending leadership and management groups in Silicon Valley."
Legarza will serve as the human development coach for the coaches and athletes. As part of the role, he will be responsible for engineering attitudes to produce leaders who build trust and achieve results through demonstrated programs and analysis. Legarza will have monthly meetings with the coaching staff to create individual leaders amongst the program. Additionally, he will meet monthly with men's basketball athletes to make sure their attitude is consistent with behaviors that produce results.
"He is a cutting-edge leader in the area of human development," added Smith. "We are truly blessed to have him work with our staff and student-athletes. His presence should help us grow and produce positive leaders that will represent USF for years to come."
