Short Shatters USF Record at Husky

Complete results
SEATTLE, Wash. – Alex Short, a senior from Bicknackre, England, and cross country All-American, shattered the USF school record in the 5,000 meters around the oval of Dempsey Indoor as one of five Dons racing at the Husky Invitational on Friday.

He currently holds the ninth-best time on the track this season, moving into the top 10 on NCAA Indoor Track and Field Qualifying List.

"Alex positioned himself well in the early stages of the race, covered moves and battled hard to finish in the top seven," USF head coach Helen Lehman-Winters said. "I am so proud of how Alex managed himself in this field, and I think he now knows what he is capable of if he is full engaged in the race. For where we are in our training, we could not be more pleased – he has a lot more in him."

Short's seventh place finish and final time of 13:47.57 shaved off more than 10 seconds from the previous school best set by Eric Causey two years ago at this same event. Short's stacked heat included race winner Edward Cheserek of Oregon, who set a new NCAA-lead time and indoor personal best (13:32.59). Second-place finisher Colby Gilbert also notched a school record for the host Washington Huskies (13:34.85).

Racing in an earlier heat at the 5K distance, Mohamed Aziz rounded the track in 14:42.80 to take third in his section. Outpaced by Pac-12 foes from Colorado and Washington, his time was just two-tenths of a second off a personal best.

A trio of women also took to the track at the Husky, headlined by Charlotte Taylor. Running indoors for the first time in her collegiate career, Taylor clocked in with a mark of 16:08.98 to earn 12th in the final heat of the women's 5,000 meters.

"This was Charlotte's first indoor race of her career, and she put herself right in the mix," noted Lehman-Winters. "Although she was not quite sharp enough to hold on to the pace when things started to heat up, we are very happy with where she is right now."

Running in section three, Isabelle Brauer turned in a time of 16:44.91 to finish 14th. Junior Ashley Moffett also competed for the Dons, taking second place in the night's first 5K heat with a mark of 17:16.38. Also her first foray in indoor racing, the time broke her previous personal best in the 5,000 by more than three seconds.

The Dons finish up in Seattle tomorrow, with men and women running the 3,000 meter and one mile distances at Dempsey.
