An unprecedented 12 athletes will represent the University of San Francisco at the upcoming NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Track and Field Championships in the preliminary competitions, the largest contingent of Dons to take the trek to the West Regionals.
Representing disciplines from the 800 meters to the 10,000 meters, USF head coach
Helen Lehman-Winters is looking forward to the weekend in Austin, Texas, with an eye on advancing to the final rounds Eugene, Ore.
"This is by far our largest and most talented group that we are sending to the NCAA regional meet, and this is a tribute to what a great job both my staff and athletes have done this past year," she said. "This is a phenomenal group with a high level mentality so we are looking forward to the challenge of advancing through the rounds in our quest to get to the NCAA Final in Eugene."
The list of qualifiers includes first-time athletes as well as men and women who will be making repeat appearances at the regional level. The Dons' entries are highlighted by cross country All-Americans and USF's Athletes of the Year, the British duo of
Charlotte Taylor and
Alex Short.
Short, also a second-team All-American on the indoor oval in the 5,000, will enter the 10,000 meter field with the 10th-fastest mark in the West and the USF school record in the event. Taylor, a native of Spalding, England, enters the regionals with the top times in the region in both the 5,000 and 10,000. Her 5K time of 15:29.07 set this spring is not only the fastest in the West, but in the NCAA this season.
The women's distances races are stacked with Dons, as Taylor will be joined by Swedish sophomore
Isabelle Brauer in the 10K, where Brauer enters as the 10th-fastest. In the 5,000, Taylor will toe the line in the semifinals alongside teammates
Weronika Pyzik and
Tatjana Schulte. Pyzik, a sophomore from Bilgoraj, Poland, will be making a repeat appearance in the 5K, while redshirt freshman Schulte earns her first trip to an NCAA regional field.
Another distance ripe with USF competitors is the 1,500, where
Hugh Nicklason,
Elena Burkard and
Marie Bouchard will compete for the Dons. For Nicklason and Burkard, the trip to regionals will be a familiar one. Nicklason made an appearance in 2016, and Burkard is back for the third time after a hiatus last season.
In her first time on the national stage, sophomore
Emma Stahr will compete in the 800 meters, as the 35th-fastest woman in the West.
Ben Alcock will also take a spin around the track at regionals in his first year of running in the U.S. The Bedford, England, native narrowly made the field, as the 48th and final entrant in the men's 5,000.
Mohamed Aziz, a junior from Staten Island, NY, is making his first appearance in the NCAA field, and will join repeat performer in the steeplechase,
Ryan Driscoll.
The preliminary competitions are scheduled for May 25-27. The University of Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky will host the east preliminary and the University of Texas in Austin, Texas will host the west preliminary. The qualifiers out of these two regions will compete in the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships held June 7-10 in Eugene, Oregon.
