2017 NCAA Championship Regional Field - Teams and Individuals
Tim Widing, who led USF in stroke average and finished third at the West Coast Conference Championships as a freshman, has been selected to the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships as an individual competitor.
Widing will join four other individual competitors at the Washington Regional, which will be held at the Aldarra Golf Club in Sammanish, Wash. All six regional tournaments will be conducted May 15-17 and the low five teams and the low individual from each regional will advance to the NCAA Championships, scheduled for May 26-31 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill.
Widing will be joined by Hidetoshi Yoshihara (UCLA), Ryan Whalen (Wyoming), Cole Madey (UCLA) and Michael Colgate (Nebraska) to round out the individual competitors who hope to advance to Rich Harvest Farms on Memorial Day weekend.
The 14-team Washington Regional features top-ranked USC, No. 2 seed Kent State, the nation's 12th ranked team and 13th-ranked Texas A&M, the regional's No. 3 seed. The rest of the field includes No. 4 Florida State, No. 5 Washington, No. 6 Alabama, No. 7 San Diego State, No. 8 UTEP, No. 9 Penn State, No. 10 Michigan, No. 11 Michigan State, No. 12 Seattle and No. 14 Bryant.
Widing, a first team All-WCC selection who is currently ranked 83rd in the most recent Golfweek/Sagarin individual rankings, recorded six top-10 finishes in nine events this season and posted a team-best 70.4 stroke average in his first season on the Hilltop. He was the team's top finisher in seven of nine events and his solo third at the West Coast Conference Championships in Provo marked his sixth top-10 and fourth top-5 finish of the season. He recorded three of the team's lowest rounds of the season, including a school-record, 9-under 63 in the final round of the Ping Cougar Classic on April 1.
The six regional sites include The Grove, College Grove, Tennessee, hosted by Middle Tennessee State University; Kampen Course, West Lafayette, Indiana, hosted by Purdue University; Stanford Golf Course, Stanford, California, hosted by Stanford University; University of Texas Golf Club, Austin, Texas, hosted by University of Texas at Austin; University Club, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, hosted by LSU and Aldarra Golf Club, Sammamish, Washington, hosted by University of Washington.
