USF Held Scoreless Against Cal State Fullerton

Box Score

SAN DIEGO – The University of San Francisco men's soccer team played Cal State Fullerton in a non-conference, neutral site match at the San Diego State University Sports Deck on Sunday, with the Titans coming out on top, 3-0.

Coming off a 1-0 victory on Friday night over host SDSU in the Courtyard Marriott San Diego Central Tournament, the Dons (1-5-0) matched up against the Titans (3-3-0) and played to a scoreless first half.

"We started well as it was an even first half.  We had good momentum and was creating chances," said USF head coach Eddie Soto.

The game remained 0-0 until the 57th minute when Fullerton's Christian Pinzon found the back of the net on a run down the right side and pushing the ball past Dons goalkeeper Ruben Stuiver from a narrow angle.

"As soon as the second half started, we ran out of steam.  You could see it in their legs with the amount of energy we exerted on Friday night," said Soto.  "And Fullerton took advantage of their chances."

The Titans followed up with goals in the 69th and 88th minute by Ross McPhie and Samuel Goni for the final margin of score, 3-0.

San Francisco next plays the two-time defending NCAA champions and current number one ranked, Stanford Cardinal on the road on Friday, September 15.  The Cardinal were upset, 2-0, by Tulsa over the weekend.

Stanford will be the fourth nationally ranked team the Dons will play this season.  Just six games in, USF has already played No.21-UCLA, No.4-Indiana and No.17-Butler.
