PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Playing in the final fall tournament of the season, the University of San Francisco men's golf team opened up the Saint Mary's Invitational with a 1-over 285 at the historic Poppy Hills Golf Course. The Dons had two players under par and currently sit in fifth place after 18 holes.
Conference foes BYU and Pepperdine sit atop the leaderboard. The Cougars finished the afternoon 13-under, while the Waves came in second at 3-under. Arizona and Colorado State are third and fourth respectively. BYU's Peter Kuest, the individual leader after 18, set the 18-hole record with a 10-under 61.
The Dons have two players sitting high on the leaderboard as well. Sophomore Soren Lind continues his spectacular fall campaign. After 18 holes he's currently tied for second after shooting a 3-under 68. Lind opened the tournament with a birdie on the first hole and finished the front-9 4-under. A birdie on 14 gave him six for the round.
Junior Tim Widing is right behind Lind, tied for fourth with a 2-under 69. On the front-9 Widing was 4-under, carding birdies on the first, third, eighth and ninth hole. A double bogey on 11 and a bogey on 17th were the only blemishes on Widing's card. Following the double, he regrouped with a birdie on 13 to give him five for the round.
Sophomore Toby Briggs finished tied for 38 after the opening round after finishing with a 2-over 73. Briggs began and ended his round on high-notes, he birded the par-5 first, and after a double-bogey on 17 he eagled 18 to finish the back-9 even. The eagle by Briggs was one of 11 on the opening round.
In fourth for the Dons was freshman Christoffer Palsson who finished with a 4-over 75. Alex Chin finished tied for 69th with a 5-over 76.
COACH'S QUOTE
"Today was another solid start overall," said head coach Jack Kennedy. "While we gave some shots away late in some tougher conditions, we competed all day and have set ourselves up for a good run tomorrow."
