THE RUNDOWN
SAN FRANCISCO – The University of San Francisco women's basketball team was defeated by their cross-bay opponent Saint Mary's, 59-73, Thursday evening at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center. As a silver lining, the Dons were able to raise money for the #Play4Kay Free Throw Challenge, recording 14 made free throws in the contest. If you have not pledged yet, head to our
PledgeIt website. The challenge runs through the month of February.
The Gaels opened with a 6-0 lead.
Michaela Rakova gots the Dons on the board with a triple, but the visitors pushed back with a 10-0 run to take a 16-3 advantage with 1:30 minutes remaining.
Anna Seilund knocked down a three pointer to close the quarter to close the gap to 10 points. USF shot 13.3 percent from the field and had four turnovers in the opening frame.
Seilund had five quick points in the opening minutes of the second quarter, but the Dons had no answer for Saint Mary's who shot 61.5 percent in the first and then poured in 18 points in the second to outscore the Dons 34-19 at the half.
USF finally started to settle in and find a rhythm in the third frame. After going shot-for-shot with the Gaels, they went on an 8-0 run including two three-pointers to narrow it to a 10-point game after trailing by 19 in the second quarter. USF shot 60.0 percent from the field and 80.0 from downtown (3-for-4) to enter the final frame down, 38-52.
Although the Dons paced Saint Mary's with 21 points a piece in the fourth quarter, the first half deficit was too much to overcome. The Gaels went on to win, 73-59.
