THE RUNDOWN
SAN FRANCISCO - The University of San Francisco beach volleyball team will be co-hosting the WCC/Big West Challenge on Saturday with Cal State Northridge. The one-day tournament will be held at Main Beach in Santa Cruz, Calif. and will include the hosts, Sacramento State, Portland and No. 6 Cal Poly.Â
This marks the Dons second tournament in the spring. The team went 1-3 at the Bay Area Kick-Off Tournament last weekend, hosted by Stanford in Palo Alto, Calif.Â
THOUGHTS FROM FRANCISCOÂ
"We have a clear idea where we need to get better and a few practices to sharpen our game," said head coach
Frank Lavrisha. "We are looking forward to our only 'home' event of the season on Main Beach in Santa Cruz."
Â
"The No. 3 pair, Nora Buvarp-Lavik and
Camille Araujo, had a highlight weekend match win over Stanford last Friday afternoon. It indicates the high-end potential of their pairing and clearly states the Dons' depth. The No. 2 pair,
Julia Topor and
Anna Dalla Vecchia, played tough on Saturday. They were on the short end of two 3-set matches versus Saint Mary's and Pacific, with three of the sets determined by only the minimum of two points to win. The No. 1 pair of
Haley Howell and
Carly Lowry played a composed against the Broncos to clinch the Dons' first beach match win of the season.
Shannon Levinson has been the 'super sub' for our young season, stepping in for
Erica Ronda and pairing up with
Pi'ikea Clemens. They ground out a well-fought match win against Pacific for the Dons' lone pairs win on Saturday.
Laura Leap and
Sabrina Blackwell moved to the No. 4 pairs after winning their first match against Santa Clara and setting up the dramatic finish for Howell and Lowry."
