BSB | Dons Held Scoreless in Opener Against Gonzaga

The Rundown
SAN FRANCISCO - The University of San Francisco Dons (21-17, 10-6 WCC) baseball team were kept scoreless in their game one loss to West Coast Conference foe Gonzaga (20-16, 10-6 WCC).

In this toughly contested conference game, it would take four innings for either team to get on the board, and it would be Gonzaga to get the scoring started. After a lead-off walk, a one-out double down the left field line would put runners on second and third. A ground out to second base by Austin Pinorini would give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.

The Bulldogs would add three more in the fifth inning, which began with a hit batter. The lead-off batter, Carson Breshears, would then steal second base and third base on the Dons to get into scoring position with one out. A batter later Gonzaga would score on a single up the middle that drove in the runner from third to make it 2-0. After a walk to load the bases, Ponticelli would get the second out of the inning through a strikeout, before Isaac Barrera came up and hit a fly ball that would land just under the glove of a diving Jonathan Allen to drive in two and give the Bulldogs a 4-0 lead.

USF would threaten in the bottom of the sixth. Matt Campos and Brady Bate would hit back-to-back singles with one out, with Campos advancing to third on the single from Bate. The right fielder would steal second in the next at-bat to put runners on second and third with one out. The Dons were unable get any runs across as a fly out and strike out would end the inning and keep the score at 4-0.

Gonzaga would score a run in both the eighth and ninth innings. In the eighth, the Bulldogs would open the inning with a single up the middle by Pinorini. A sacrifice bunt and a single to right field would move Pinorini to third base, putting runners on first and third with one out. A bunt single from Ernie Yake would bring in the runner from third. In the ninth, a two-out single followed by a double would bring in another run to make it 6-0.

With this loss the Dons are now 21-17 overall and 10-6 in the WCC. USF will look to bounce back in the second game tomorrow with first pitch slated for 1 p.m.
