The Rundown
SAN FRANCISCO - The University of San Francisco Dons (23-19, 12-7 WCC) baseball team lost another tough extra inning game, with this one coming against West Coast Conference rival, Santa Clara (18-21, 5-11 WCC) in 12 innings.

The Dons would take another early lead as they would get a run on the board in the first inning. After the first two batters for the Dons were retired,
Michael Perri stepped up to the plate and launch a solo home run to left field to make it 1-0, USF.

Santa Clara would come back in the second inning and take the lead with a home run of their own. USF starter,
Thomas Ponticelli, would get two quick outs before a single to right field would extend the inning for the Broncos. The next batter up, Jake Macnichols, would hit a two-run home run to left field to make it 2-1, Santa Clara.

Ponticelli would settle down and find his groove, working into the eighth and throwing six scoreless innings after the home run in the second inning. USF would even up the score in the bottom of the seventh with a two-out rally. A one-out single from
Brady Bate and a walk from
Jack Winkler would put runners at first and second with two-outs. Back-to-back walks from
Aaron Ping and
Tyler Villaroman would bring Bate in from third and make it 2-2.

With the game into the tenth inning, the Broncos would get the go ahead run on a one-out solo home run from Matt Smithwick. The Dons would come back out in the bottom half of the inning and load up the bases with a lead-off walk from Allen and back-to-back singles from Helland and Perri. Ross Pusakrich would ground into a double play, which would bring home Allen from third and tie the game at 3-3.

After an inning of scoreless baseball, Santa Clara would get the winning run in the 12th, which began with a one-out hit batter. The next batter up, Machnichols, would hit a double down the line that would bring the runner in from first base to make it 4-3, which would be enough to get the Broncos the win.

With this loss the Dons are now 23-19 and 12-7 in the WCC. They will look to bounce back and even up the series tomorrow. Game is set to start at 1 p.m.

- Perri's home run in the first inning was his seventh of the season, tying him for the team lead with Jonathan Allen.
- With his RBI today, Perri increases his team leading total in that category to 34.
