BSB | USF Bats Come Alive in Series Finale Against Santa Clara

The Rundown
SAN FRANCISCO - The University of San Francisco Dons (24-20, 13-8 WCC) baseball team's bats would come alive in the final game of their series against Santa Clara (19-22, 6-12 WCC), beating the Broncos 12-4.

Santa Clara would get the scoring started in the second inning. With a runner on first, the Broncos would lay down a sacrifice bunt to move the lead-off batter to second. The next batter up would hit a ball into deep left field and over the head of Jonathan Allen for a double, which would drive in the runner to make it 1-0, Santa Clara.

The Dons would answer back in the next half inning with six runs to take a decisive lead. With two-outs and Tyler Villaroman on first, the sophomore would steal second before Allen would earn a walk. Three consecutive doubles from Riley Helland, Michael Perri and Ross Puskarich would bring around four runs for USF. Brady Bate would come up after Puskarich and launch a two-run home run over the left field fence to make it 6-1, USF, after two innings.

In the top of the fourth inning the Broncos would add two runs to cut the lead to 6-3. Santa Clara would get runners on first and second following an error from Jack Winkler on a tough chopper. The next batter would single through the right side and into right field, which would bring the runner home from second. The second run of the inning would come in on a ground ball to Aaron Ping at second, who would record the out, and the runner would score from third.

USF would answer, again, in the bottom of the fourth with two runs coming with two-outs. Back-to-back singles from Helland and Perri and a one-out walk from Bate would load the bases. Winkler would step up and drive a double down the right field line that would bring Helland and Perri around the score and make it 8-3, USF.

After the Broncos added a run in the fifth, USF would come back in the sixth inning and score two more runs. Five consecutive singles from Puskarich, Bate, Ping, Winkler and Campos would make it 10-4, USF, after six innings of play.

The Dons would add two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth, which began with a double from Bate into left field. After Ping was hit by a pitch, Winkler would record his third hit of the afternoon with a single through into right field. Matt Campos would come up with the bases loaded and get hit by a pitch to bring home the first run of the inning. Villaroman would ground into a double play, but it would bring Ping in from third to make it 12-4.

The Dons are now 24-20 and 13-8 in the WCC. Their week will get started on Tuesday, May 1, as they head to the South Bay to take on Stanford at 6:05 p.m.
