The Rundown
MORAGA, Calif. - The University of San Francisco Dons (19-11, 9-1 WCC) baseball team won an exciting conference game over Saint Mary's (15-13, 5-5 WCC), 5-3.
Â
Coming up against a strong pitching staff from Saint Mary's, the Dons would get a pivotal early run in the first inning.
Jonathan Allen singled on the first pitch of the game, then
Riley Helland reached base on fielder's choice. With Allen running on the play, Helland's ball hit up the middle fell to the shortstop, who was caught between two minds and the junior catcher was able to beat the throw to first base.
Â
After another fielder's choice on
Michael Perri's at-bat, USF had runners on first and third.
Ross Puskarich came up next and launched a long fly-ball to centerfield that was caught, allowing Allen to score and make it 1-0, USF.
Â
USF would add another key run in the sixth inning. Perri started a one-out rally with a double into right centerfield. Following a strikeout from Puskarich,
RJ Cordeiro singled through the right side to drive in Perri and make it 2-0, USF.
Â
The usual Friday starter,
Thomas Ponticelli, got the nod following the rain out yesterday and kept up his impressive season. He went into the eighth inning with a shutout, but the Gaels were able to get to the junior for two runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Â
After a lead-off single for Saint Mary's, a popped bunt was mishandled by Ponticelli and one runner remained on base. Another single through the left side would move Conor Thane to third base. The next batter would double to left field, which would drive in two to make it 2-2.
Brendan Jenkins would come in with the bases loaded and induce an inning ending double play to keep the score at 2-2 heading into the ninth inning.
Â
The Dons would take the lead back in the ninth inning through fundamental baseball. Ping led the inning off with a hit by a pitch, which brought up pinch hitter,
Jason Kreske. Kreske would lay down a great sacrifice bunt that moved
Brady Bate, who pinch ran for Ping, to second. Bate would steal third in the next at-bat. Freshman
Jack Winkler would single into center field a few pitches later, which would drive in the go ahead run.
Â
USF would add another two important runs to finish the inning through an infield single from Helland and a sac fly by Perri.
Â
USF is now 19-11 overall and 9-1 in the West Coast Conference. USF and Saint Mary's will play a doubleheader tomorrow to complete the three-game series.
