SAN FRANCISCO – The 47
th Annual Northern California Area Emmy Award Nominations were announced earlier today, and USF's own Director of Creative Video,
Katie Morgan has been nominated for her feature "Behind the Mask: Joey's Journey." This is the first Emmy nomination for a member of the USF athletic department.
The Emmy award is presented for outstanding achievement in television by The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS). San Francisco/Northern California is one of nineteen chapters awarding regional Emmy statuettes. Northern California is composed of media companies and individuals from Visalia to the Oregon border and includes Hawaii and Reno, Nev. Entries Aired during the 2017 calendar year.
"I have had the great privilege of working in the sports television industry for the last 18 years and have learned from some of the very best producers and editors," said Morgan. "It's because of their patience and mentorship that I was able to create something very special at the University of San Francisco. This nomination not only shines a light on the tremendous athletes that we work with day in and day out, but also validates our commitment and dedication to creating compelling storytelling through video. Joey Carney for allowing me to share his struggle and triumph, Mel Melcon and the Los Angeles Times for sharing their archives and Ruizhi Lin for her devout passion and beautiful cinematography."
Morgan, the driving force behind the Don's amazing video, has won three national Emmy's with the NBC Olympics for her work as an Associate Producer. This is her first Regional Emmy Nomination.
Morgan served as the producer, editor and cinematographer for the piece, with help from Ruizhi Lin, who also helped with the cinematography. The duo followed Carney for an entire year to tell his incredible story.
Also nominated in the same category is the WCC's own Jeff Tourial and Ezra Border for their work on "Playing for a Higher Purpose" which aired on TheW.tv. The EMMY winners will be announced on June 2
nd at The Emmy Gala which will be hosted at the SF Jazz Center, the award show will be streamed live at
