With the health and safety of student-athletes and everyone connected with the West Coast Conference guiding all discussions, the WCC has postponed all conference fall competition due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The WCC Presidents' Council, in consultation with the Conference's 10 athletic directors and Commissioner Gloria Nevarez, made this decision following thorough discussion over the course of several weeks.
"We are disappointed for our student-athletes, coaches, staff, and fans, and understand that today's decision was made based on our conference-wide concern for the health of our students, campuses, and communities," said USF Director of Athletics,
Joan McDermott. "Our student-athletes display incredible resilience day in and day out during this difficult time, and we are all proud of their persistence and determination. We are committed to working with health officials to enable our student-athletes to safely return to competition in accordance with all city, county, and state guidelines."
The WCC remains fully committed and continues to work closely with campus leadership on plans to ensure a safe environment to conduct the 2020-21 WCC men's and women's basketball seasons in the winter. The Conference intends to explore various models for conducting WCC competition in the fall sports of men's and women's cross country, men's and women's soccer and women's volleyball in the spring of 2021. The WCC strongly supports efforts to encourage the National Collegiate Athletic Association to conduct fall NCAA championships in the spring.
July 16 - 11 a.m.
With the health and safety of student-athletes paramount in all decisions, the West Coast Conference Presidents' Council will delay the beginning of fall competition in all Conference sports due to the COVID-19 pandemic. WCC programs will not participate in any competition prior to Sept. 24, 2020, the WCC and its member institutions announced today.
The welfare of student-athletes is of primary importance in all decisions. Discussions focused on the health and welfare of WCC students, personnel, fans, and local communities. The Conference and its membership understand that providing a safe environment while dealing with this virus has an impact on each of our campus communities as well as our global community.
"This decision was made out of concern for the safety and protection of our communities, our campuses, and our student-athletes," said Director of Athletics Joan McDermott. "We are working closely with University of San Francisco staff, as well as the West Coast Conference Presidents' Council, to monitor changing conditions and ensure the safest possible return for our student-athletes."
This decision includes the traditional fall seasons in men's and women's cross country, men's and women's soccer and women's volleyball. Baseball, beach volleyball, men's and women's golf, women's rowing, softball and men's and women's tennis, which hold their traditional seasons in the spring, will not participate in a fall competition scheduled prior to Sept. 24. The men's and women's basketball competition seasons, scheduled to begin Nov. 10, are not impacted by this decision.
