SAN FRANCISCO -- University of San Francisco head women's golf coach,
Sara Doell was selected to represent the United States as an international coaching delegate at the US College Sports Camp in Thailand last month. This was the company's seventh sports education program featuring US college coaches.
The event has been sponsored by the Singha Corporation for the past five years, and additional sponsors this year include Mazda and Doi Kham. The camp was attended by 70 youth golfers on May 25-27, including four US college coaches from elite NCAA Division I universities, camp attendees had the opportunity to learn about initial eligibility, NCAA rules, recruiting timelines, and how to choose the right college. Coaches taught technical skills, mental training, fitness basics, and explained how golfers can use their athletic talents to study in the United States.
"Having the opportunity to travel to Thailand to help grow the game of golf was an invaluable experience for me," said coach Doell. "The junior golfers at this event had so many great questions and we had the opportunity to tell them what life as a student-athlete in America entails. We also had the chance to teach them skills from putting to chipping, pitching and full swing as well as help them with course management. The other coaches and I had a great time and I am truly in awe of the culture of Thailand that is rooted in respect and kindness. I can only hope to have this opportunity again in the future!"
Coaches flew into Bangkok and experienced cultural sites such as the Golden Mountain (Wat Saket Ratchawora Mahawihan), Loha Prasat (Wat Ratchanadaram), and the market at Khao San Road. The golf camp was hosted at Royal Hills in Nakhon Nayok for the third time.
Coach Michael Hughes of Brown University and coach Holly Clark of UNC Charlotte, taught full swing at the driving range. Coach Kari Williams of Rutgers taught putting on the putting green, and coach Doell taught chipping and pitching at the short game area. Chris Clark of BirdieFire talked to the campers about the importance of keeping their stats and using that to formulate more efficient practice.
The camp culminated in a 36-hole competition, and two campers received sportsmanship awards for their efforts both on and off the golf course.
"Spreading the brand of the University of San Francisco is a 24/7, 365 which includes international trips like this one. We are really proud of Sara for her efforts to spread the great game of golf and spread the USF brand abroad," said Director of Athletics
Scott Sidwell.
