MGOLF | Dons Open Tournament Tied for Sixth

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Playing in their final fall tournament of the season, the University of San Francisco men's golf team opened play with a 1-under 283 to finish sixth at the Saint Mary's Invitational located at Poppy Hills Golf Course.  The Dons had just one player in the top-10, junior Soren Lind, who is currently tied for ninth.

USF had all five players finish inside the top-50 on Monday, with no one shooting worse than 1-over par.  Lind was one of three Dons to shoot par or better as field featured a plethora of low scores.  As a team, USF recorded 20 birdies on the day.

Lind, back after missing the last two tournaments, had his best round of the fall shooting a 2-under 69.  The junior opened the round on the 10th and after a double bogey on 12 he went birdie-birdie to get back to even. A bogey on 15 and a birdie on 17 had him even after the first nine holes.  On the second nine he was just as strong carding three more birdies to give him six for the round. The six birdies ties him with teammate Toby Briggs for fourth most after 18 holes.

In second for USF was Tim Widing and Briggs who finished tied for 33rd with an even par 71.  Widing opened his day with bogeys on three of the six first holes.  Pars on 16 and 17 got Widing on track who would go on to birdie 18 and one.  A run of seven pars preceded a birdie on nine that allowed the Dons' senior to finish even.

Briggs' up and down afternoon began with a bogey on 10.  On the first nine he was 1-under thanks to birdies on 11, 13, and 18.  On the second nine he opened with a birdie on one before carding a bogey on two, a double on four and a bogey on five.  Back-to-back birdies on eight and nine saw Briggs finish the day even par.

Sophomores Matthew Anderson and Christoffer Palsson finished the day tied at 42nd after shooting 1-over 72s.  Anderson opened the round with a bogey on 11 and 15, but a birdie on 17 began a string of 10-straight pars that saw him finish the day 1-over.  His 15 pars for the afternoon is tied for second most in the tournament.

Palsson's three birdies on the first nine had him 1-under at the turn.  On the second nine a bogey on two and six and a double on three were sandwiched with birdies on one and nine to finish the day 1-over.

Christopher Adnams competed as an individual, he finished the afternoon tied at 87th after shooting a 6-over 77.

Colorado State's Davis Bryant is the individual leader after the first day after shooting a 7-under 64.  The Rams are the leaders after the opening round, leading second place BYU nine strokes, after shooting a 17-under 267.
