SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The University of San Francisco women's golf team had a strong San Luis Obispo Country Club. Squaring off against some of the top teams in the nation, the Dons wrapped up their first two rounds just outside the top-10, tied for 11
th.
With three teams still needing to finish their second round, which will resume tomorrow morning at 7:00 a.m., the Dons are currently tied for 11
th with New Mexico State at 45-over 621 (311-310). No teams are under par for the tournament with No. 42 Oregon sitting atop the leader board 8-over with a few holes still to play in the second round.
USF had two players finish inside the top-30 with freshman
Annika Borrelli cracking the top-20 coming in tied for 15
th after 54 holes. Junior
Samantha Gong finished tied for 29th after a strong second round.
"Annika had a great first round of 71 on a tough golf course," said head coach
Sara Doell. "She looked poised and strong throughout the whole day. Sam turned it around after a tough first round with 5 birdies en route to a 74 in her final round of the day. Overall, the course played tough and the scores across the board were high. I am proud of how the team represented us and look forward to seeing them finish strong tomorrow."
Borrelli was on fire to open the tournament, after 18 holes she was one of three players to be under par after carding a 1-under 71. She recorded five birdies in the opening round which is tied for fifth most after 36 holes in the tournament. In the second round, she finished with a 7-over to give her a 36-hole score of 6-over par 150 (71-79).
Gong opened the tournament with a 7-over 79 in the first round. In the second Gong was locked in. The junior recorded five of her six birdies during the final 18 holes. On the front-9 she was 1-under with a birdie on three and three-straight on holes five, six and seven. Her six birdies for the afternoon are tied for second most in the tournament, one back the leader.
Sophomore
Joan Soewondo finished the afternoon with a 12-over 156 (79-77).
Pearl Rojanapeansatith finished tied at 71 with a 20-over 164 (84-80), two spots behind her was freshman
Jade Siphomsay who finished the first day with a 21-over 165 (82-83).
After two rounds, no player is under par. Oregon's Kathleen Scavo is the lone player at even par through 15 holes in the second round, which is where she finished when her round was halted due to darkness.
The Dons will wrap up the tournament tomorrow. Round three is slated to begin at 9:00 a.m. after the three remaining teams finish their second round.
