STANFORD, Calif. – The University of San Francisco men's golf team is in the hunt sitting tied at eighth in the deepest field they will compete against this season at the opening round of The Goodwin hosted by Stanford. USF, who is currently ranked 64th in the latest Golfstat rankings, got off to a hot start and carried that momentum to finish the day tied with No. 8 Oklahoma and No. 45 Northwestern with an 8-over 288 at the Par-70, 6,758 yard Stanford Golf Course.
USF carded 14 birdies as a team in the opening round which is tied for sixth most in the 27 team field. All five Dons birdied the first hole to begin the tournament. USF had two golfers finish in the top-25 in a field that features 133 of the best golfers in the nation. After 18 holes, Toby Briggs is tied for 12th with Tim Widing behind him at a tie for 25th.
"Today was a solid start," said head coach Jack Kennedy. "The guys did a great job of staying patient in a post-season like environment. We know this thing has a long way to go, but we like where we are at and look forward to getting some rest and getting ready for tomorrow afternoon."
Briggs continues his stellar play from earlier this week at the Duck Invitational with an even par 70 to begin the tournament. His day began with a birdie on one and played largely mistake free golf the rest of the round. A bogey on six and 12 was erased by a birdie on 16 to finish the round at even par.
Widing finished his opening round with a 1-over 71. He finished the front-9 2-under with birdies on one, eight and nine. On the back-9 a bogey on 10 and a double bogey on 12 had him three over, he finished off the round blemish free recording six straight pars while battling less than stellar conditions.
Soren Lind finished in third for the Dons, he sits at a tie for 46th. He carded a 3-over 73 after recording birdies on one, four, and 16. Alex Chin led the Dons with four birdies on the afternoon, he finished tied for 52nd with a 4-over 74. Christoffer Palsson is tied at 76th after recording a 5-over 75.
Washington opens the tournament in the lead with a 2-under 278, they were just one of two teams to finish the round under par. Colorado's Daniel O'Loughlin, Santa Clara's Derek Ackerman, and Stanford's David Snyder all finished with a 3-under 67.
The Dons will return to action tomorrow afternoon when they tee off in the afternoon partnered with Saint Mary's and Arizona.
