MSOC | John Doyle Enshrined in San Jose Sports Hall of Fame

SAN JOSE, Calif. — University of San Francisco Hall of Famer and All-American, John Doyle, will be inducted into the San Jose Sports Hall of Fame as announced by the San Jose Sports Authority on Thursday evening.

Doyle, a Bay Area icon who played for the Dons from 1985-88, was one of the most sought-after American players ever to come to USF. A former member of the California State Select team, he played for the prestigious Fremont Celtic Youth team. Upon arriving at USF, coach Steve Negoesco said, "John has the potential to be one of the best defenders in the nation. He has unlimited potential." Proving coach Negoesco prescient, Doyle went on to play in the 1988 Olympic and 1990 World Cup Games as well as the Pan American Games and President's Cup.

Playing in all 21 games his first year, Doyle was a solid, central defender. With his height and jumping ability, he dominated both penalty areas. In his first USF home game, he scored the winning goal – a blistering 25 yard shot – against SMU in the Met Life Classic. Reflecting his impressive play and contribution to the team, Doyle won the Stephen Negoesco Award his freshman year.

As a sophomore, he played in 22 games. The following year, however, he missed seven games due to his commitments during Olympic qualification rounds. He also missed the final four USF games due to injury. Nevertheless, having played only 11 games, he was a finalist for the Hermann Trophy, which is given to the finest collegiate soccer player in the nation. For the second consecutive year, he scored a game-winning goal, beating New Mexico in the Met Life Classic.

In his last year, his game participation for USF was again curtailed as he continued to play for the 1988 U.S. Olympic and World Cup teams. He only played in 11 games, but posted game-winning goals against Loyola Marymount and U.S. International. In the team's 5-0 win over LMU, Doyle scored a hat trick.

After USF, Doyle continued to play on the U.S. National Team. He was named to Soccer America's '92 All-Star team as well as its All-Gold Cup team. From 1996 to 2000, Doyle played professionally in the U.S. and abroad. He was appointed Assistant Coach for the San Jose Earthquakes in 2004, and is currently serving as the club's General Manager.

Joining Doyle in the 25th Hall of Fame class is former Stanford women's volleyball head coach John Dunning, record-setting cross country cyclist Seana Hogan and PGA champion Juli Inkster. The newest members of the San Jose Hall of Fame will be inducted on Nov. 14 at the SAP Center in San Jose.
