SAN FRANCISCO – Two women from opposite sides of the country; two very similar experiences growing up. In this edition of Dons From Distance, women's basketball graduate student
Dolapo Balogun and freshman track and field sprinter
Rayne Anwar discuss their feelings on George Floyd, white privilege, and the Black Lives Matter movement.
USF Director of Creative Video,
Katie Morgan, begins the episode with a brief introduction of these two phenomenal athletes, and then Balogun and Anwar take the stage to share their experiences growing up as black women in the United States.
Dolapo "Dop" Balogun joined the Dons for the 2019-20 season. The native of Rahway, N.J. shares her perspective on the tragedies in Minneapolis and some of the frustrations of the African-American community.
"Our goal with this conversation is to influence other student-athletes and encourage them to facilitate conversations in their own locker rooms and within their own teams," said Balogun. "This is bigger than sports. It is bigger than what Division you are in. The conversation starts with us asking what can we individually do to make a difference."
Fellow Don and freshman
Rayne Anwar from Mission Viejo, Calif., explains how the issues that have launched demonstrations across the nation are no different in Minnesota and New Jersey than here in California.
