Dons, Gaels Battle in Double Overtime Draw

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Returning home to Negoesco Stadium for the first time since Aug. 26, the University of San Francisco men's soccer team (1-7-1, 0-1-1) battled Saint Mary's (7-3-1, 0-0-1) to the brink on Saturday evening as the Dons and Gaels finished in a 2-2 draw following two overtime periods.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Wasting no time, the Dons struck first off of a corner kick from Dominic Valdivia as Shayan Charalaghi pushed a perfect header past the Gael goalkeeper to give USF a 1-0 lead in just the second minute of play.
  • Continuing to attack, Tamba Di Mattia fired his first shot on the contest just a few minutes later, but Saint Mar's (SMC) would respond with their first goal of the evening off of the foot of David Brog at the 15:12 mark, tying the match at one all. Shortly thereafter, SMC jumped on top, 2-1, after Riley Lynch found the cutting Cade Cowman for the Gaels' second goal at 27:20. I
  • In the moments to follow, defense remained key as neither team would be able to find the back of the net again in the first half. At the halftime break, Saint Mary's remained in front of the Dons, 2-1.
  • As the match played on into the second half, the energy became intense as the Dons attempted to mount a comeback to even the score. In the 81st minute, they would do just that when Nik Kizerian found the open Tobias Wangerud at the top of the box, who then blasted home his first collegiate goal to draw even with the Gaels.
  • As the energy intensified down the stretch, USF would have to play one man down for the remainder of the match following a second yellow card to Wangerud. Ultimately, the Dons buckled down when it mattered most as the USF defense held strong to force extra time following three shot attempts from Saint Mary's in the final four minutes of regulation.
  • In the overtime periods, SMC continued to press offensively, but still could not find the go-ahead goal as the Dons denied the Gael attacks through the final twenty minutes of action. Battling until the final whistle, USF and Saint Mary's would end in a 2-2 draw following two full overtime periods, the first draw for the Dons since. Apr. 11 of last spring against Portland.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • With his early strike, Charalaghi now sits second on the team in goals (2) and total points (4).
  • For Wangerud, the Norwegian scored his first collegiate goal on just his second career shot, which also gave him the first two points of his career.
  • In the cage, Brandon Kenniston logged five total saves on the night, good for his second most so far this season. Notably, his .714 save percentage in the match also marks his best finish in a single game so far this fall.
UP NEXT:
With no contests scheduled for the upcoming week, USF will begin to prepare for their match at Omaha, which is set for Tuesday, Oct. 19 at 7:00 pm CDT. Live streaming and live statistics will be available via the team's schedule page.
