SAN MATEO, Calif. – Following the conclusion of the 2021 regular season, the West Coast Conference officially announced their annual men's soccer honors on Wednesday afternoon.
For San Francisco, forward
Nonso Adimabua was named to the All-WCC First Team for the second consecutive year while midfielder
Tobias Wangerud was tabbed to the All-WCC Freshman Team.
Starting in 15 of USF's 16 matches this fall, Adimabua turned in yet another dominant year on the pitch as the Nigerian led the Dons in goals (5), points (11), shots (38), shots on goal (17) and game-winning goals (1). Additionally, he was also third in minutes, having logged 1,216 total minutes across his 15 appearances. Notably, Adimabua finished amongst the best in the conference in multiple offensive categories as he tied for third in the WCC in shots on goal while also placing fifth in shots, tied for fifth in goals and ninth in total points.
"Nonso is a talented player who draws so much attention from other teams," said head coach
Chris Brown. "Nonso showed his toughness this year as he battled through some knocks and some tough results. He really improved his work rate and defensive effort throughout the season. He is becoming a more versatile and complete player and I am confident he will only get better."
For Wangerud, the freshman earned All-Conference honors after an impressive first year on the Hilltop. Starting in 9 of his 10 appearances, the Norwegian logged 741 total minutes as he totaled three points during the fall, which included his first collegiate goal against Saint Mary's on Oct. 9. Just a few weeks later, Wangerud tallied his first assist in USF's match at Pacific on Oct. 27.
Overall, Wangerud's selection to the All-Freshman Team marks the sixth consecutive year at least one Don has been named to the freshman team.
"Tobias has a bright future as a Don," Brown said. "He played his best soccer towards the end of the season against our toughest opponents. He has creativity and the physicality to be a force in the WCC for years to come."
All six individual awards - including the all-conference teams - were voted on solely by the WCC's eight head coaches.
After leading Santa Clara to the conference title in 2021, head coach Cameron Rast was voted the WCC Coach of the Year. LMU's Noel Caliskan and Jacob Jackson earned WCC Offensive Player of the Year and Goalkeeper of the Year honors, respectively, for the second consecutive season. Pacific's Erik Centeno was also voted at the WCC Freshman of the Year.
