COTO de CAZA, Calif. – For the second consecutive year the University of San Francisco men's golf team took home the team title at the Orange County Collegiate Classic, senior
Alex Chin earned his first tournament championships competing as an individual.
Including Chin, the Dons had all six competitors finish in the top-15 with five in the top-10. USF finished the tournament with an even par 864 (287-290-287) after shooting a 2-under 287 in the final round.
"It is always a great feeling to come away with the team and individual titles," said head coach
Jack Kennedy. "The team battled through some tough breaks and difficult circumstances early in the day but found some momentum late to finish with the victory. I'm very proud of Alex and excited for him. He played a flawless round of golf today to earn the victory. He has put a lot of work in and deserves the success."
Chin, the Dons' steady senior, got stronger as the tournament progressed. Following the opening round, he was sitting in seventh. He finished the suspended second round with a 1-under 71 to move into third place. In the final round he was perfect, carding a pair of birdies and 16 pars for a 2-under 70. For the tournament, he finished with a 3-under 213 (72-71-70).
Fellow fourth year
Soren Lind finished second. After leading through the first two rounds, Lind earned his eighth career top-10 shooting a 1-over 73 in the final round. For the tournament, Lind scored a 2-under 214 (68-73-73). His final round began with an eagle on the par-5 six and finished with a birdie on the par-3 fourth hole.
Christoffer Palsson finished tied for fourth after shooting a 2-under 70 in the final round. For the tournament, Palsson shot an even par 216 (75-71-70). In the final two rounds he finished with nine birdies giving him 11 for the tournament.
Toby Briggs captured his first top-10 finish since he tied for ninth at this tournament last year. He finished this tournament tied for sixth with a 1-over 217 (72-72-73). Briggs carded a tournament-best 14 birdies.
Tim Widing finished tied for ninth with a 3-over 219 (74-74-71). It is the fifth year's 21
st career top-10 finish.
Matthew Anderson finished tied for 14
th with a 6-over 222 (73-76-73).
The Dons will return to action on March 7 when they travel to Bandon, Ore., to participate in the Bandon Dunes Championships hosted by Idaho at Bandon Dunes Golf Club.
