CLE ELUM, Wash. – The 25th ranked University of San Francisco men's golf team sits atop the leaderboard with No. 6 Wake Forrest after shooting a 6-under 278 in the opening round of the Cle Elum Regional at the par 71 Tumble Creek Club at Suncadia Resort on Monday afternoon.
As a team, USF was tremendous on the par-4 and par-5 holes. USF finished the day 2-under as a team on the par-4 holes with an average score of 3.96. On the par-5s they were even better, finishing 11-under as a team, with an average score of 4.45.
The Dons have two in the top-10 and were led by junior Christoffer Palsson who is the co-leader after shooting a 5-under 66. Palsson's round is tied for the second lowest round to par in his career and matches the 5-under 65 that Tim Widing shot in the second round of the NCAA Regional in 2019 and is believed to be the program record in a regional.
Palsson was dialed in from the beginning. He opened his round with a birdie on 10 and 13 and eagled 15 to start the four under through the first six holes. Bogeys on 16 and 18 had him 2-under at the turn. After recording two more bogeys on two and four he was 1-under before finishing strong.
Palsson went birdie-birdie on five and six and eagled eight to finish 5-under. It is the first time in his collegiate career he has carded two eagles in the same round, he now has four eagles for his career. Palsson shares the co-lead with Washington's Peter Hruby.
Widing joins Palsson in the top-10. The graduate student, and Dons captain, makes his historic fourth appearance in an NCAA Regional. The four-time First Team All-WCC honoree did not disappoint. Shooting a 3-under 68 in the opening round to finish tied for fourth. It is his sixth career round at par or better in the regionals.
Widing was a quiet steady force for the Dons, he opened his round with three-straight pars before carding the first of six birdies on 13. A bogey on 17 had him 1-under at the turn. On the second nine, bogeys on six and seven had him 1-under overall, he regained the momentum closing out the round with birdies on eight and nine.
Matthew Anderson and Toby Briggs are tied at 32nd after shooting 1-over 72s. Anderson finished with four birdies on the day. Briggs finished with five birdies. Soren Lind is tied for 43rd with a 2-over 73.
The Dons and Wake Forrest are tied for first at 6-under. No. 7 Pepperdine is in third place with a 5-under 279. East Tennessee State and Washington round out the top-five finishing tied for fourth with 4-under 280s.
