Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

No. 24 SMU Bests USF in Tight Contest

DALLAS, Tex. – Facing their second top-25 opponent in three games, the University of San Francisco women's soccer team (3-3-1) battle No. 24 SMU (5-1-0) to the brink on Thursday evening, but ultimately fell to the Mustangs, 1-0, at Washburne Soccer and Track Stadium.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Applying pressure on SMU out of the gates, Elle Soleau fired the first shot of the match for either team less than two minutes into play.
  • In the following minutes, the Mustangs seemed to find their rhythm early offensively as they tallied three straight shots at 14:14, 14:32 and 16:23. However, it was not until the 17:34 mark when SMU would cash in on their opportunities as Jasmine Vilgrain found the back of the net off of passes from Brooke Golik and Elisabeth Tse to put the Mustangs on top, 1-0.
  • Unable to answer back as the half moved on, the Dons trailed SMU by just the one goal at halftime.
  • Similar to the first half, USF recorded the initial shot for either side in the second half when Catherine Hill attempted a shot on goal, but ultimately denied by the Mustang goalkeeper, Tatum Sutherland.
  • Down the stretch, the Dons stayed within striking distance as Sydner Cooper, Marissa Vasquez, Kalena Teufel and Jayd Sprague would each attempt to even the match themselves. In the final ten minutes of regulation, Kaylin Lunsford, Cooper and Vasquez pushed one last time to knot the score at one, but it was the SMU defense that would prove to be superior as the Mustangs held on to secure a 1-0 victory over USF. Notably, Thursday's victory marked SMU's third shutout in as many home games as the Mustangs have outscored their opponents 2-0, 1-0 and 1-0 in their three home wins this fall.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • In a tale of two halves, SMU outshot USF 10-1 in the first half, but the Dons responded by tallying 10 shots to the Mustangs' 1 in the second. Overall, both teams logged five shots on goal each.
  • For freshman Fatima Waldo, the South San Francisco native fired her first shot of her collegiate career in just her second appearance of the season on Thursday.
  • As a team, USF also led SMU in corner kicks, 6-2.
UP NEXT:
Continuing their stretch in the Lone Star state, USF will head south to Waco, Tex. for a matchup at Baylor. Game time is set for 10:00 am PDT. Live streaming and live statistics are also available via the team's schedule page.
