Broncos Top Dons On Wednesday Night

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Playing under the lights at Negoesco Stadium, the University of San Francisco men's soccer team (7-4-3, 0-3-1 WCC) battled Santa Clara (4-3-5, 1-1-2 WCC) until the final whistle, but were bested 3-1 by the Broncos on Wednesday night.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Coming out strong from the kickoff, the Dons were dominant in possession for the beginning minutes of the match, firing the first shot of the game as Max Chretien ripped one from the top of the box that just went wide right at the 3:06 minute mark. Just minutes later, he took his second shot of the game at the 10:56 mark to get the Dons rolling.
  • Responding with a surge of offensive attack, Santa Clara took their first shot at 15:42, which was cleaned up by Eric Waltz. Minutes later, the Broncos got down the right side of the field to send a dangerous pass into the box, leading to a goal by Oladayo Thomas at the 17:54 mark.
  • USF was able to get two more shots in the first half- one just tipped over the top of the goal by Arjan Dosanjh at 21:58 and one came on goal by Dominic Valdivia at the 31:28 mark. Just a few minutes later, Santa Clara got extended their lead to 2-0 with a goal by Caden Buckley in the 33rd minute.
  • Santa Clara was able to put one more goal away in the 35th minute of the match by Eduardo Perez to conclude their scoring for the night. The Dons finished the first 45 minutes with grit as they worked to try and find a goal of their own before halftime as Andri Jonasson was able to header a cross in for a shot at the 42:48 minute mark.
  • In the second half, the Dons came out of halftime fast as USF recorded three shots in the first ten minutes. The result came for them soon after as Max Hamelink scored at the 59:18 minute mark, who was assisted by Andri Jonasson inside the 6 foot box. Despite their effort to close the gap, and outshooting Santa Clara in the second half 10-6, the Dons fell short as the score remained 3-1 until the final whistle.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Max Hamelink recorded his seventh goal of the season and led the team with two shots on goal and three shots total. He also recorded a full 90 minutes for the second game in a row.
  • Andri Jonasson came off the bench as a dangerous attacker for the Dons, logging his second assist of the season and taking two shots in the match.
  • The Dons were able to record double digits in shots for the 12th time this season as they led Santa Clara in shots, 16-9. Additionally, USF led SCU in corner kicks, 10-0.

  • Head Coach Chris Brown on the match- "Disappointing result tonight. We started the game well and then gave up a soft goal against the run of play. Unfortunately we did not have the necessary response after conceding and our mistakes were compounded. Credit to Santa Clara for finishing their chances. We had a good response in the 2nd half but it wasn't enough. Credit to their Golkeeper for making a couple big saves. In order for us to continue to improve we have to put a full 90 minute performance together. We will put the right group on the field Saturday and be ready for a key matchup against Pacific."
UP NEXT:
USF will continue their home stretch as they take on Pacific (2-9-2, 1-2-1 WCC) this Saturday, Oct. 29 at 7:00 P.M. Live streaming and live statistics are available via the team's schedule page
