SPOKANE, Wash. -- Returning to the road for the final time during the 2022 season, the University of San Francisco men's soccer team (7-5-4, 0-4-2) battled hard for 90 minutes against the Gonzaga Bulldogs in a match that ended in a 1-1 draw on Saturday afternoon at Luger Field.
Arjan Dosanjh was the hero for USF as he headed in the lone Dons' goal on Saturday afternoon for his fourth of the season in what was USF's second draw of conference play. In goal for USF,
Eric Waltz was able to record five saves on 16 shots faced against Gonzaga.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- The first half of action in the Pacific Northwest was a high-paced up-and-down affair as each side was able to generate numerous chances but each goalkeeper was on their game early as USF was able to out shoot the Bulldogs nine to seven but both programs headed into the break in a scoreless tie.
- Gonzaga was able to draw first blood early in the second half as they found the back of the net at the 47 minute mark off a penalty kick to take the early 1-0 lead on their home field.
- Down a goal in the second half, the Dons were able to buckle down and found a great scoring chance advantage of it. Following an impressive throw in from Easton Harryman, Kian Jones was able to set up Donsanjh with a nice header as Dosanjh beat the Bulldogs' keeper to even the match at one at the 68 minute mark of play.
- Both sides worked hard to try and secure the game winning goal but neither team was able to find the back of the net the rest of the match as USF earned their fourth draw of the 2022 season.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Dosanjh was able to score his fourth goal of the season for the Dons as his return season from injury has been a shining success as he's now second on USF's team with 10 points on the season.
- Waltz turned in another tremendous performance in goal for USF as he was able to record five saves to move into fourth place among WCC keepers with 47 saves on the season. The Dons' junior keeper is also now leading the conference in save percentage at .758 for the season.
- Duggan came off the bench and made an impressive pass to Dosanjh that evened the score and helped USF earn the draw. It was Duggan's first assist of his collegiate career as well.
- Contributing to the Dons' offesnive attack, Nathan Simeon and Dominic Valdivia each recorded two shots against the Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon.
POSTGAME WITH THE DONS:
"We aren't satisfied with getting a point on the road but was proud of our response after going down 1-0. Majority of the 2nd half we had 5 freshmen on the field who came in and changed the game. I thought we were unlucky not to get the second.
Eric Waltz made big saves when he was called upon and Arjan continues to show his resilience this year. I thought
Matthew Duggan and
Kian Jones came in after playing limited minutes this year and played very well. We look forward to next Saturday to send our seniors out the right way against the conference leader."
UP NEXT:
USF now turns their attention to Senior Night at Negoesco Stadium as they will welcome the San Diego Toreros (7-4-6) to the Hilltop on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 7:00 p.m. Live streaming and live statistics are available via the
team's schedule page.
