LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Following their strong 2021-22 regular season that led to a third place finish in the WCC standings, the USF Dons women's basketball team (16-14, 10-8) are in Sin City to participate in the 2022 UCU West Coast Conference Basketball Tournament at Orleans Arena. The Dons will begin their time in Vegas by battling fellow Bay Area opponent the Santa Clara Broncos (16-14, 8-10) after they knocked off Pacific and San Diego in consecutive days to reach the next round against the three-seeded Dons.
The Dons played the most games away from War Memorial at the Sobrato Center with 18 road or neutral site contests during the 2021-22 season as USF has been no stranger to playing on new courts. USF will send the conference's leading scorer in
Ioanna Krimili as well as All-WCC freshman recipient
Claudia Langarita to Orleans Arena looking to make noise in the desert.
DONS IN VEGAS:
- USF ended their regular season on a high note going 6-3 in the month of February including winning three straight road games to finish the conference season.
- Krimili, Langarita and Kennedy Dickie each were honored by the WCC for their excellence during the regular season as Krimili made her second consecutive first team, with Claudia on the second team and Dickie being a second team All-WCC selection.
- The Dons made their calling card this season shooting efficiently from all three levels as they ranked fourth in the WCC in field goal, three-point and free throw percentage as a team.
- Jasmine Gayles had a tremendous performance the first time the two squads met in the South Bay, as USF needed all of the 28 points she scored in a career high performance as they came up just short in the first meeting. Amalie Langer answered in a big way in the win two days later scoring five key points late to put away Santa Clara and get USF in the win column in WCC play.
- USF hopes to have Lucija Kostic back in the rotation after missing the previous two games to end the regular season with an injury.
SCOUTING THE BRONCOS:
- The Dons and Broncos split their two meetings during the regular season back in January as each team won at home, with SCU winning a high scoring affair and the Dons grinding out a defensive battle at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center for USF's first conference win of the season.
- USF will need to try and find an answer for Santa Clara's Lindsey VanAllen who was second only to Krimili in points per game this season at 19.1 this season. VanAllen had a standout performance in her first game against USF scoring 28 points and grabbing five rebounds on her home floor.
- Both teams shoot the ball very well from the outside as the Broncos are third in the WCC shooting 33.5% from deep this season as the Dons will need to be at their best to keep Santa Clara away from the three-point line.
- Saturday's meeting could be a high scoring affair as the Broncos are third to last in the conference allowing their opponents to score 68.5 PPG so far this season.
