Cougars Strike Early to Salvage Series

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Playing their series on a sunny afternoon, the University of San Francisco baseball team (23-24, 11-10 WCC) dropped game three of their weekend set against BYU (23-18, 8-10 WCC), 12-4, at Benedetti Diamond on Saturday.
 
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Wasting no time to begin the, BYU got on the board first with four runs on three hits in the bottom of the first to grab an early 4-0 lead. Two innings later, third baseman Austin Deming launched a solo home run in the top half of the third to extend the Cougar advantage to 5-0.
  • As both pitchers settled in towards the middle innings, BYU erupted on offense again with five runs in the top of the sixth, which included a grand slam from first baseman Jacob Wilk. In the home half of the inning, USF got on the board on a pinch-hit RBI single from Kyle Knell as the Dons trimmed their deficit to 10-1.
  • Moving into the seventh, BYU added two runs on three hits to extend their lead to 12-1, but USF once again answered in the bottom half with three runs of their own, which was highlighted by a two-run home run from Harris Williams III.
  • As the final two innings played through, neither side could find much more offensively as the Cougars held on to secure the 12-4 victory to salvage the series against the Dons. 
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Providing a spark at the top of the order, Luke Keaschall logged two more doubles to extend his team lead (18 doubles) as the sophomore finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI on Saturday.
  • With his big fly in the seventh, Williams III is now tied with Gabe Giosso for the team lead with 35 RBI.
  • Remaining a steady force out of the bullpen, Julian Washburn notched his fifth consecutive scoreless outing as the right-hander tossed 2.2 innings of shutout baseball in the final frames for USF.
POSTGAME: UP NEXT:
USF will hit the road again as the Dons will travel to Sacramento State for another midweek matchup this Tuesday, May 2. First pitch from John Smith Field is scheduled for 6:00 pm as live streaming and live statistics will be available via the team's schedule page.
