Campagna's Career Night Powers Dons Past Hornets

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Powered by a career-night from Michael Campagna, the University of San Francisco baseball team (24-24, 11-10 WCC) took down Sacramento State (23-21, 13-11 Big Sky), 4-2, on Tuesday night at John Smith Field to sweep the season series from the Hornets.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • With both pitching staffs settling in to open the contest, the trio of Adam Shew, Owen Stevenson and Weston Lombard combined to toss six scoreless innings while allowing just two hits and punching out three batters.
  • Moving to the seventh, Michael Campagna got the inning started with a bang as the USF backstop blasted his second home run of the season over the left field fence to get the Dons on the board, 1-0. In the home half, Sacramento State answered back with two runs, one of which came on a wild pitch and one via a sacrifice bunt. Heading into the eighth, the Hornets held a 2-1 advantage.
  • After Zach Freeman singled up the middle and then stole second base to begin the eighth inning, Kyle Knell worked a walk to get two baserunners on for USF. Delivering the blow once again, Campagna launched his second home run of the night shortly thereafter to drive home Freeman and Knell and put the Dons back in front, 4-2.
  • Shutting down the Hornets in the late innings, Sam Beck came on to notch three scoreless innings of relief himself as the right-hander slammed the door on Sacramento State in the ninth to secure the season sweep for USF by a final score of 4-2.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Enjoying a career-day at the plate, Campagna recorded his first two home run game of his collegiate career as the San Diego native also set a new career-high with four runs driven in. Notably, it was also the second time in the last three games in which Campagna has scored at least two runs.
  • Reaching base on a walk three times, Luke Keaschall extended his on-base to sixteen straight games while Gabe Giosso pushed his streak to fourteen straight on Tuesday night.
  • On the mound, Shew tallied his third scoreless outing in his last four appearances while Beck picked up his fourth win of the year to move into a tie with Jesse Barron for most wins on the team.
UP NEXT:
USF will return to the Bay Area as the Dons will make the short trip to Moraga for a three-game series at Saint Mary's this upcoming weekend. Live streaming and live statistics are available via the team's schedule page.
