SAN MATEO, Calif. – The West Coast Conference officially announced their Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 26.
Eric Waltz, a junior goalkeeper for the Dons, was selected as this week's winner as the San Jose native has now earned the honor twice this season.
Continuing his stellar season in the cage, Waltz delivered two more dominant performances for the Dons this week.
On Thursday, Sept. 22, the keeper logged three saves in USF's 2-1 victory at Sacramento State, which included making the game-winning save with 14 seconds remaining in regulation. On the play, Sacramento State's Michael Gonzalez fired a rocket at the goal, but Waltz dove to his left and extedended with his hand to deny the Hornet attack.
On Sunday, Sept. 25, Waltz logged four saves in USF's narrow 1-0 loss to Air Force as the San Jose State transfer tallied four plus saves for the fifth time this season. Overall, Waltz currently leads the WCC in goals against average (.667), save percentage (.842) and shutouts (4) while also ranking second in saves per game (3.56).
Within the WCC, USF now becomes the third team in the conference to have won weekly awards at least twice, joining Portland and LMU. On the offensive side, midfielder CJ Tibbling of Portland was the conference's Offensive Player of the Week.
