Bulldogs Top Dons in Game One

SPOKANE, Wash. - Beginning conference play in the Pacific Northwest, the University of San Francisco baseball team (9-5, 0-1 WCC) battled with the defending WCC regular season champion Gonzaga Bulldogs (4-12, 1-0 WCC) to open their weekend series in Spokane, but ultimately fell to the Bulldogs, 10-4, in game one at Patterson Baseball Complex.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • After a scoreless first inning from both sides, Michael Campagna got the scoring going in the top of the second when he blasted a no-doubter over the left field fence to give USF an early 2-0 lead.
  • Responding shortly thereafter, Gonzaga evened the game at two apiece on an RBI triple from Sam Stem in the home half of the second.
  • Adding to their advantage two innings later, GU extended their lead to 4-2 with two runs on three hits in their turn at the plate in the fourth.
  • Answering right back, the Dons put up a similar performance in the top of the fifth as the green and gold rallied back on three hits to push across two runs and even the contest at 4. Notably, Harris Williams III drove home Darius Foster before Mario DeMera laced a double into the left center field gap to score Tyler Martinez.
  • Following a scoreless sixth from each team, Gonzaga jumped back in front with two runs in the seventh and four runs in the eighth to regain control and widen their gap.
  • Although JT Amaral would pinch hit and reach base for the green and gold in the top of the ninth, GU held on to take game one of the series, 10-4.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • At the plate, Campagna logged his second multi-hit performance of the season by finishing 2-for-4with two RBI and one run scored. Additionally, Tyler Martinez also tallied two hits by finishing 2-for-3 with one run scored.
  • On the mound, Matt McConnell tossed his second-longest outing of the year by going 2.2 innings pitched. Overall, the right-hander recorded his third scoreless appearance of the season on Friday, allowing just three hits while striking out one.
  • With one hit each on Friday night, DeMera and Stapleton each pushed their hitting to streak to four games.
