SPOKANE, Wash. -- Wrapping up their first conference series of the season, the USF Dons baseball team (9-7, 0-3) dropped the afternoon finale against the Gonzaga Bulldogs (6-12, 3-0) by a 8-2 final score at the Patterson Baseball Complex on Sunday.
Making his fourth start of the season,
Jesse Barron did a great job of keeping his team in the game as he threw six innings and allowed three runs while walking just one batter and striking out four Bulldogs on Sunday. At the plate,
Michael Campagna continued his torrid hitting at the plate going 1-for-3 with an RBI single with
Mario DeMera and
Patrick Keighran scoring the pair of USF runs against Gonzaga.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- Gonzaga got off to a strong start on Sunday as they scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first to take the first lead of the game and tacked on another run in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead heading into the top of the third.
- USF's offense began to come alive in the top of the fourth inning as DeMera led of the inning with a base hit to left field before coming around to score on Campagna's RBI single to left field making it 3-1 Bulldogs in the fourth.
- The Dons weren't done yet chipping away at their deficit as Keighran led off the USF half of the fifth with an infield single before coming all the way to score on an RBI groundout from Ryan Martinez that brought the Dons back within a run at 3-2.
- The Bulldogs would go on to take control of the rest of the game as they scratched across a run in the bottom of the seventh before putting the game away with four runs in the bottom of the eighth to secure the 8-2 win on their home diamond.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Barron delivered a quality start for his team on Sunday as he tossed six innings and allowed three earned runs with a walk and four strikeouts while throwing 94 pitches in his outing.
- Campagna recorded his 10th RBI of the season as he went 1-for-3 at the plate driving in USF's first run of the game.
- Keighran provided some thump from the bottom of the Dons' batting order as he went 1-for-3 with a run scored against the Bulldogs.
