SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Returning home for the first of five consecutive home games, the USF Dons baseball team (9-8, 0-3) came up shy by a 5-3 final score on their home diamond to the Nevada Wolf Pack (11-10, 2-4) on Wednesday afternoon.
Leading the way for the Dons was strong middle of the order production from
Christian Stapleton and
Michael Campagna who combined to go 3-for-5 at the plate with three walks and a hit by pitch against Nevada. Making his third start of the season,
Weston Lombard tossed three innings for USF striking out one batter on Wednesday.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- Nevada got off to a fast start on Wednesday afternoon as they scratched across a run in the top of the first and hit a home run in the top of the second to take an early 2-0 lead against the Dons.
- The Wolf Pack were able to tack on another run on a solo shot in the top of the fifth before adding a pair of runs in the top of the sixth as the visitors held a 5-0 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth.
- USF's bats began to wake up in the Dons' half of the sixth inning as Ryan Martinez led off the inning with a bunt single before coming around to score on Michael Campagna's opposite field RBI single to make it 5-1 Nevada.
- The Dons' pitching staff excelled in the final three innings putting up zeros to keep the team's offense within striking distance.
- Down to their final three outs, USF began to claw their way back against Nevada as Blake Atkins led off the inning with a walk and came around to score when Christian Stapleton scored on a hit by pitch to get the Dons back within three. One batter later, Michael Campagna gutted out a tough plate appearance to work a walk that scored Harris Williams III in what ended up a 5-3 Wolf Pack win on Wednesday.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Stapleton went 2-for-3 with a walk, hit by pitch and an RBI against Nevada on Wednesday.
- Campagna reached base four times on Wednesday as he went 1-for-2 with three walks and an RBI against the Wolf Pack.
- Getting the start against Nevada, Blake Pitts reached base twice as he went 1-for-4 at the dish with a walk on Wednesday.
- Tossing zeroes out of the bullpen, Kai Burdick, Matt McConnell and Oscar Lepe each threw three scoreless innings with five strikeouts against Nevada.
