Shew Dominates as Dons Route Tigers on Saturday

STOCKTON, Calif. – Bouncing back from a close series opening loss, the USF Dons baseball team (11-11, 2-6) put together a complete team effort to dominate the Pacific Tigers (9-15, 2-6) by a 14-0 final score from Klein Family Field on Saturday afternoon.

Putting together his best outing of the season, Adam Shew tossed seven scoreless innings against the Tigers as he allowed just eight total base runners while striking out five UOP hitters. At the plate, Will Asby had a dominant afternoon going 3-for-4 with his third round tripper of the season to give the Dons some separation.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • After two scoreless innings to begin the game, the Dons' bats began to wake up as Blake Atkins led off the third with a triple and came around to score on Mario DeMera's sacrifice fly to right field putting USF up 1-0 early.
  • One inning later, Michael Campagna began the frame with a four pitch walk and came around to score on Christian Stapleton's sac fly to put the Dons up 2-0 in the middle innings.
  • Getting his big day at the plate going, Asby connected for another home run as he pulled a line drive down the right field line to give USF the 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth with Shew excelling.
  • Looking to put the game away for good, Blake Pitts and Darius Foster each worked walks and came around to score on a Pacific throwing error that made it 5-0 Dons. Asby was able to come through again for his team with a two-run infield single that scored Harris Williams III and Campagna as USF led 7-0 heading into the bottom of the eighth.
  • The Dons then were able to put up a seven spot in the top of the ninth to put the game way out of reach as Asby was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score DeMera and then Williams III scored on a UOP balk to make it 9-0. Stapleton was able to come through with a big blast of his own with a three-run shot to center that brought home Asby and Campagna to put the Dons up by 12. Ryan Martinez scored USF's 13th run of the day on an Atkins' fielder's choice, and the final Dons' tally came on an opposite field double from Foster that scored Atkins.
  • Pitching the final two innings, Hunter Holzemer was able to slam the door with a pair of scoreless frames as USF earned the 14-0 road victory.
 NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Shew turned his best outing of the season as he picked up the victory with seven scoreless innings allowing six hits, walking one batter and striking out five while throwing exactly 100 pitches against Pacific.
  • Asby had another big day in the middle of the USF batting order going 3-for-4 with the home run and four runs driven in and two runs scored on Saturday afternoon.
  • Stapleton is now tied with Asby for the team lead in home runs with three this season as he went 1-for-4 with the home run, a run scored and four RBI against the Tigers.
  • Hitting in the three-hole, Campagna scored three runs and worked a pair of walks to continue his strong offensive season.
  • Williams III made the most of his at-bats on Saturday as he went 2-for-6 with a pair of runs scored while playing center field for the Dons.
 CATCHING UP WITH COACH DITOMA:
"It was an important day to bounce back after a hard-fought loss last night. Adam Shew was lights out today and set the tone only giving up six hits and a walk over seven strong innings. Our at-bats were good and wore them down late in the game and broke it open. It was nice to see some guys break out in the batter's box."
