Offensive Explosion Helps USF Take Series Over Pacifc

STOCKTON, Calif. – Continuing the team's torrid weekend at the plate, the USF Dons baseball team (12-11, 3-6) emerged victorious in the rubber match of their weekend series with the Pacific Tigers (9-16, 2-7) by a 14-8 final on Sunday afternoon.

The top of the Dons' batting order set the tone early and throughout Sunday afternoon's game as Mario DeMera, Harris Williams III and Michael Campagna combined to go 9-for-13 at the plate with seven runs scored and RBI against the Tiger staff matching a new season-high in runs scored. On the mound, Matt McConnell helped the slam the door shut on UOP as he tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings to help USF pick up their first conference series win.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • The USF top of the order wasted little time in getting going on Sunday as DeMera led off the game with a walk and then reached third on a double from Williams III before Campagna smacked a three-run home run to left field putting the Dons up 3-0 before an out had been recorded.
  • Looking to add on further, Logan Azem led off USF's second with a walk and came around to score on a DeMera RBI groundout to make it 4-0. The Dons would tack on another run an inning later as Zach Griffin drove his second home run of the season over the wall in left to make it 5-0 USF heading into the Tigers' half of the third inning.
  • Pacific scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the third but USF was ready to respond in their half of the fourth inning as Campagna drove in DeMera with a sacrifice fly to make it 7-1 Dons.
  • UOP would go on to add a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth to get back within three runs with USF's offense showing no signs of letting up.
  • The Dons would go on to put the game away for good with a seven-run sixth inning as the whole lineup contributed to the scoring onslaught as Campagna singled home DeMera with a knock back up the box. Will Asby continued his strong weekend with an RBI single of his own that scored Williams III giving USF the 9-3 advantage, while Christian Stapleton kept the line moving with an RBI single that brought home Campagna to extend their lead to seven runs. Getting a shot to hit with the bases loaded, Griffin was able to work a walk that brought home Asby, and Azem was able to score another run on a sac fly to right field that scored Stapleton to put the Dons' up 12-3. Blake Atkins came through with an RBI single up the middle to score Ryan Martinez, and the Dons' final run of the afternoon came courtesy of a DeMera RBI single to bring in Griffin giving USF the 14-3 lead.
  • Trailing by a lot, UOP was able to build some momentum of their own to cut into their deficit with a five-run bottom of the seventh to make it a 14-8 game.
  • The score would hold the rest of the game as McConnell came in to slam the door with the final out coming on an impressive diving catch from Atkins in the shallow outfield.
 NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Campagna had a big afternoon at the dish on Sunday as he went 3-for-4 with his third home run of the season to go along with four RBI, two runs scored and a walk.
  • Hitting in the lead-off spot again, DeMera was 3-for-4 at the dish with three runs scored and a pair of walks and RBI against the Tigers.
  • Williams III completed his strong bounce back weekend by going 3-for-5 with a double, two runs scored to go along with a walk and run scored.
  • Catching on Sunday, Griffin connected on his second home run of the season as he went 2-for-4 with three RBI, a pair of runs scored and a walk against Pacific.
  • Slamming the door shut in relief, McConnell tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings against UOP as he struck out two hitters and didn't allow a hit or walk on Sunday afternoon.
 CATCHING UP WITH COACH DITOMA:
"It was very nice to come out and get an early lead and to keep building on it. It's important to set the tone on Sundays that you are here for the fight. Pacific was able to claw their way back into the game, but Matt McConnell was nails at the end and finished the job."
