SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Wrapping up another conference series on the Hilltop, the USF Dons baseball team (14-17, 5-10) couldn't emerge victorious as they fell short in a high-scoring affair dropping their game to the Pepperdine Waves (13-20, 6-9) by a 9-6 final score from Benedetti Diamond.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- Pepperdine was able to set the tone early on Sunday as they scratched across a run in the top of the first and then hit a three-run homer in the second inning to make it 4-0 Waves early.
- The score would hold until the Dons' half of the fifth inning with Tyler Martinez leading off the inning with a single to right with Mario DeMera driving him in with a base hit that was misplayed by the Pepperdine right fielder that allowed T. Martinez to score and DeMera to reach third base. Will Asby then followed up with a massive home run to right center field that cut the Waves' lead down to one at 4-3 through five innings of play.
- Following the big USF inning, the Waves were able to respond with four more runs of their own in the sixth and an additional tally in the top of the seventh to make it 9-3 visitors late in the game.
- Beginning to build another rally, Atkins led off the bottom of the eighth with a single and Patrick Keighran worked a one out walk to put some pressure on Pepperdine. Harris Williams III hit into a fielder's choice that scored Atkins, while Asby brought in another run as he reached on an error that brought home Keighran to get the Dons within four runs. Scoring the final run of the afternoon, Michael Campagna was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Williams III as that score would hold the rest of the way as the Waves won 9-6 in the rubber game of the series.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Providing the big blast on Sunday, Asby went 2-for-5 as he connected on his fourth home run of the season as he drove in a pair of runs against the Waves.
- Manning the hot corner for USF, Keighran went 2-for-4 at the dish with a walk and run scored in the series finale against Pepperdine.
- Batting clean up against the Waves, Campagna reached base three times as he went 1-for-3 with a walk, hit by pitch and an RBI to end the weekend.
- On the mound, Oscar Lepe and Kaleb Woltz combined to throw 3 1/3 innings allowing just one run combined with four strikeouts of Pepperdine hitters out of the bullpen.
