Bulldogs Outlast Dons in Afternoon Slugfest

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Returning to their home diamond for the first of four games this week, the USF Dons baseball team (14-23, 5-13) just dropped a hard-fought slug fest on Wednesday afternoon by a 14-9 final score to the Fresno State Bulldogs (21-19, 11-10) at Benedetti Diamond.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Fresno State got off to a fast start as they plated a run in the top of the first to take an early lead on the Hilltop.
  • USF was able to answer in the bottom of the second as Mattie Thomas pulled an opposite field single and came around to score on Patrick Keighran's RBI single to even the score at one apiece.
  • The Bulldogs would answer back with two more runs in the top of the third before the Dons were armed with a response of their own. Blake Atkins was hit by a pitch with one out and then came around to score on Michael Campagna's long home run to left field to even the score at three.
  • Putting together 10 unanswered runs, Fresno State scored nine in the top of the fifth and added another run in the top of the sixth to lead 13-3 heading into the USF half of the sixth.
  • Beginning to build their rally, Harris Williams led off the Dons' sixth with a single to right center and Keighran followed with a double down the left field line to score Williams III. Zach Griffin then walked and Blake Pitts was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Mario DeMera then brought home Keighran with a sacrifice fly to center field and Tyler Martinez followed with an RBI single to score Griffin to make it 13-6. Will Asby would deliver a sac fly of his own to score Pitts and Campagna would drive in T. Martinez to make it 13-8 Fresno State.
  • Not done yet, Williams III clubbed a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the seventh to cut the deficit down to four runs.
  • Fresno State would scratch across one more run in the top of the ninth as they took home the 14-9 victory on Wednesday afternoon.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Williams III had a big afternoon at the plate going 3-for-5 at the plate and connecting for his fifth home run of the season as he also scored a pair of runs on Wednesday.
  • Campagna joined in on the home run parade as he went 2-for-5 with his fourth round tripper of the season as he drove in three runs against the Bulldogs.
  • Manning third base for USF, Keighran had a good day at the plate going 2-for-4 with a walk and two RBI against Fresno State.
  • Standing out on the mound, Gabriel Barrett, Hunter Holzemer and Will Hearn each combined to throw 3 1/3 innings pitched with three unearned runs and five strikeouts on their home diamond.
