SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Beginning another weekend series on their home diamond, the USF Dons baseball team (14-23, 5-14) came up short in a close game dropping Friday afternoon's game against the Saint Mary's Gaels by a 4-2 final score.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- Friday afternoon's game featured a tremendous pitcher's duel as both teams were held scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when USF broke the tie.
- Stepping up to the plate with two out and nobody on base, Harris Williams III came through with a big home run to right center field that put the Dons ahead 1-0 heading into the sixth.
- Looking to add to their lead late in the game, Blake Atkins led off the USF seventh with a walk and then came around to score on a key double from Patrick Keighran down the left field line that brought home Atkins to extend the lead to 2-0.
- Saint Mary's would go on to score all four of their runs for the game in the top of the ninth as they earned the 4-2 series opening victory from Benedetti Diamond.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Jesse Barron turned in a tremendous start on Friday tossing 8 1/3 innings while allowing three runs, seven hits, only one walk and struck out eight Gaels' hitters in the series opener.
- Williams III continued building on his tremendous season by hitting his sixth home run of the season as he went 2-for-3 with a walk against Saint Mary's.
- Will Asby had a multi-hit performance slotted in the three hole as he went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles in the series opener.
- Coming through with another RBI extra base hit, Keighran went 1-for-4 with his double on Friday afternoon.
