SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The University of San Francisco baseball team (14-10) dropped a hard-fought battle to Minnesota (10-10), falling 12-16 in the series finale Sunday afternoon at Benedetti Diamond.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- San Francisco fell behind early as Minnesota grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning, plating the opening run on a Jake Larsen RBI groundout.
- The Dons responded later in the frame, scoring three runs to gain a 3-1 advantage. Back-to-back singles and a walk from Michael Campagna, Matty Fung, and Mattie Thomas highlighted the start of the inning as the Dons loaded the bases with one out.
- A Charles-Etienne Pelletier hit-by-pitch in the following at-bat plated the Dons' first run, tying the game at one. Tyvon Moore gave the green and gold the lead shortly after with a single up the middle, scoring Thomas and Fung to propel the Dons to a two-run edge.
- Minnesota regained the lead in the third, scoring four runs, highlighted by a Kris Hokenson three-run home run to push ahead 5-3.
- Cutting into the deficit in the bottom of the fourth, Moore provided the offense with an RBI single to left-center field, scoring TJ Rogers, to bring the Dons to within 5-4.
- The Golden Gophers answered in the top of the fifth inning, plating another run on a Hokenson RBI single, to regain its two-run advantage, 6-4.
- Campagna kickstarted a rally at the midway point of the game as he punched a single over the outstretched arm of the shortstop Larsen, plating JT Amaral for a 6-5 deficit after five innings of play.
- Minnesota broke the game open in the sixth and seventh innings, totaling five unanswered runs for an 11-5 lead.
- Despite Patrick Keighran posting his second home run of the series, a solo shot in the bottom of the seventh, the Golden Gophers solidified the 12-6 win with one final run in the top half of the ninth inning.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Moore recorded his first Division I multi-RBI game, totaling three while going two-for-four at the plate.
- Pelletier, Campagna, and Keighran totaled one RBI apiece throughout the game, while Keighran hit his second home run of the season.
- Hunter Holzemer earned an appearance on the mound for the first time this season, pitching two innings while allowing only one run on two hits and recording one strikeout.
