Baseball Earns Narrow Road Victory over San Jose State

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The University of San Francisco baseball team (15-10) climbed back into the win column when it earned a 5-2 win at San Jose State (8-17) Tuesday evening at Excite Ballpark.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • San Francisco gained an early lead after two scoreless innings, recording two runs in the top of the third inning to take a 2-0 advantage. Logan Leax kickstarted the frame with a leadoff double to left field and quickly advanced to third on a throwing error from the pitcher, Cade Cushing.
  • In the following at-bat, Charles-Etienne Pelletier picked up the RBI with a double, scoring Leax, to put the Dons ahead 1-0. Pelletier later scored to double the Dons' lead on a JT Amaral sacrifice fly out to right field.
  • Two straight batters reached base in the top of the fourth for the green and gold as Mattie Thomas and TJ Rogers led off the frame with a walk and double. With runners in scoring position and no outs, Zack Ramppen grounded out, picking up an RBI as Thomas scored to extend the lead to 3-0.
  • San Jose State put runs on the board in the sixth to trim San Francisco's advantage to 3-2. Two straight hits from Neil Jansen and Robert Hamchuk plated the Spartans' first run, and Hamchuk later scored on a Theo Hardy groundout.
  • Two insurance runs came across in the ninth inning as the Dons pushed ahead, 5-2. Michael Campagna and Leax reached to begin the inning, and Logan Schweizer pushed the runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt to the pitcher. After Pelletier struck out, Matty Fung laced a single to left field, scoring both Campagna and Leax.
  • San Jose State threatened in the final frame, loading the bases with two outs, but Gabriel Barrett struck out Matt Spear to solidify the victory for the green and gold.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Fung led the team at the plate, going three-for-five with two RBI for his first three-hit performance of the season. In the last three games, Fung is hitting .500 with six hits in 12 at-bats and four RBI.
  • Blake Shepardson picked up his first win of the season on the mound after pitching two relief innings. Shepardson shined in his ninth appearance, allowing just two hits, one walk, and matching a season-high four strikeouts.
  • Barrett earned his league-leading fourth save after pitching the game's final inning. Barrett struck out three batters and gave up two walks in his seventh outing to lower his earned-run average to 0.70.
