SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Rounding out the first series of conference action, the University of San Francisco baseball team (15-13, 0-3 WCC) fell to Santa Clara (15-10, 3-3 WCC) in both games of a doubleheader, 2-1 and 2-0, on Saturday at Benedetti Diamond.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
GAME ONE:
- After a three-up and three-down first inning for Santa Clara, Efrain Manzo sent one deep into center field in the Broncos' first at-bat of the second inning, giving the Broncos a 1-0 advantage off a solo home run to open the scoring.
- Closing out the top of the second, Lance Santerre recorded three straight strikeouts to keep the Broncos' lead at one.
- The fourth and fifth innings saw no score and just two hits combined from both squads, but in the bottom of the fifth, the Dons saw JT Amaral in scoring position following back-to-back walks. A single from Zack Ramppen brought Amaral home, knotting up the contest at one apiece.
- In the top of the seventh, Santa Clara had two outs and two runners on base following a walk and a single by Malcolm Williams. Retaking advantage for the Broncos, Dylan Joyce hit a double down the right field line, sending Ben Steck home to put the squad up 2-1.
- Following the seventh-inning stretch, San Francisco failed to put another run on the board, and despite outhitting the Broncos, Santa Clara narrowly took the front end of the doubleheader, 2-1.
GAME TWO:
- Beginning the second game of the doubleheader strong, Santa Clara scored one run in each of the first two innings via RBI singles from Caden Thompson and Michael O'Hara to put the Broncos up 2-0 through the first two frames.
- San Francisco had runners in scoring position in the bottom of the second via a single from TJ Rogers, a single from Charles-Etienne Pelletier, and a wild pitch, but Santa Clara escaped unscathed as Amaral flew out to right field to end the inning.
- Matty Fung gave the green and gold another opportunity to score in the bottom of the third with a double into right field that put Ramppen on third base. However, a Michael Campagna strikeout and Patrick Keighran pop-up closed out the third inning, and the score remained at 2-0.
- In the bottom of the eighth, the green and gold saw another opportunity to get on the board as Pelletier hit a double down the left field line and advanced to third base on a wild pitch, but Max Bayles was able to strikeout Amaral to keep the Dons scoreless.
- Despite recording a hit in every inning but the sixth, the Dons were unable to get on the scoreboard, falling to the Broncos in the final game of the series, 2-0.
