Watanabe Records First-Career Grand Slam as Dons Outlast Waves

MALIBU, Calif. – Highlighted by a six-run six inning, the University of San Francisco baseball team (16-15, 1-4 WCC) earned an 11-2 victory over Pepperdine (10-21, 5-3 WCC) Saturday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • San Francisco got into scoring position early as Kody Watanabe, Zack Ramppen, and Michael Campagna were all walked in the first inning to load the bases for the green and gold, but San Francisco failed to score.
  • Pepperdine drew first blood in the second inning as Luke Pemberton doubled to right field to bring home Connor Walsh to give the Waves the opening lead, 1-0.
  • Extending the Waves' lead, Connor Bradshaw scored for Pepperdine off a Walsh sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third to double the advantage to 2-0.
  • Following two scoreless innings, Campagna got San Francisco on the board with a home run in the first at-bat of the sixth inning, cutting the deficit in half to 2-1.
  • Logan Azem and Patrick Keighran each hit a single to follow suit, and Logan Leax walked to load the bases for the Dons with only one out. Capitalizing, Watanabe sent a soaring shot into right field for his first-career grand slam, putting the green and gold in front, 5-2.
  • Capping off the sixth inning, after being walked, Amaral scored off a Pepperdine error to extend the lead to 6-2.
  • TJ Rogers continued the Dons' dominance in the eighth inning, hitting a two-RBI single to bring home Ramppen and Fung. Shortly after, Campagna again reached the plate off an Azem single, pushing the green and gold's advantage to 9-2.
  • Closing out the top of the eighth, Rogers scored off a wild pitch to set the Dons' lead to eight runs, 10-2.
  • In the final frame of the ballgame, Myles Kallinger took advantage of three straight walks for San Francisco, bringing Ramppen home on a sacrifice fly to extend the advantage to 11-2.
  • San Francisco allowed just two hits in the game's final six innings to solidify its first conference win.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Putting the Dons in front for good this afternoon, Watanabe hit his first career grand slam today and set a single-game and career-high with four RBIs.
