Waves Slip Past Dons in Rubber Match

MALIBU, Calif. – The University of San Francisco baseball team (16-16, 1-5 WCC) dropped the rubber match of its three-game series at Pepperdine (11-21, 6-3 WCC), falling 6-3 Sunday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • San Francisco jumped out to an early lead when JT Amaral stole home to put the Dons up 1-0 in the top of the first inning.
  • After recording a one-out infield single, Amaral quickly advanced to third base on a Zack Ramppen single to left field in the next at-bat. The Dons followed with a perfectly executed double steal, with Amaral swiping home to push the team ahead.
  • Pepperdine answered in the bottom half of the frame on a Connor Bradshaw solo home run to deep center field.
  • The Waves capitalized on a crucial Don fielding error, scoring two runs in the second to take a 3-1 advantage.
  • After two scoreless frames, the Dons evened the game at three, scoring two runs in the top of the fifth inning. Logan Leax kickstarted the frame with a hit-by-pitch and moved to third on a Kody Watanabe base hit. Leax scored on an Amaral sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 3-2, and Matty Fung followed with an RBI single up the middle to tie the game at three.
  • Answering the call, the Waves scored three unanswered runs in the bottom of the fifth and six innings to double up the Dons, 6-3.
  • Pepperdine held the green and gold scoreless in the final three frames to solidify the victory and earn the series win.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Fung impressed throughout the contest, going two-for-five at the plate with an RBI.
  • Logan Azem recorded his second straight multi-hit game, posting two hits in three at-bats while earning a walk.
  • Leax posted his fifth multi-hit game of the season, recorded two knocks, and scored one run.
  • Kolby Calia pitched the final 2.1 innings and allowed just one hit and one walk, lowering his earned-run average to 0.87.
UP NEXT:
San Francisco concludes it five-game road at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Apr. 9, when it travels to take on UC Davis at Phil Swimley Field at Dobbins Stadium.
