SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Returning to the Hilltop after three consecutive matches on the road, the University of San Francisco men's soccer team (9-4-1, 4-2-0 WCC) rallied late once again, using the strength of David Raphael's first-career brace to power past LMU (5-5-5, 1-2-3 WCC), 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at Negoesco Stadium.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- Raphael got the scoring started in the 23rd minute when the forward placed the ball perfectly in the back of the net past the opposing goalkeeper on a free kick to give the Dons a 1-0 lead.
- Quick to retaliate, the Lions evened the game on a goal from Civan De Jesus Ferreira in the 24th minute, assisted by Hugo Tavares and Nathan Rodrigues, as the two teams headed into the halftime break in a 1-1 tie.
- As the second half was winding down with no score, a yellow card in the box on LMU set up David Raphael for a penalty kick with under three minutes remaining in the match. Raphael notched a brace off that penalty kick, putting the Dons in front for good, 2-1. USF held on defensively in the final two-plus minutes to secure the one-goal victory over the Lions.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Raphael recorded his first career brace against LMU, moving him into a tie for the team lead with Brayden Beason in goals (6). The duo is also now tied for fifth in the West Coast Conference (WCC) in goals. Additionally, Raphael tied a season-high with five shots against the Lions, while also recording a new season-high with three shots on goal. He is now also a perfect 3-of-3 on penalty kicks this season, one of only two players in the conference with three or more and a perfect percentage (Bastian Toelhoej/Saint Mary's).
- Lucas Jones came up clutch for San Francisco in the win, recording two saves for the Dons. His final save, which halted a breakaway LMU attack with under four minutes remaining in regulation, kept the match tied late, ultimately setting up an opportunity for USF's final goal.
- With the win, the green and gold have moved into third place in the WCC standings, currently sitting at 12 points. San Francisco is just two points behind conference leader Oregon State with three matches remaining.
