SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The University of San Francisco women's basketball team (4-2) earned its third straight victory in a 89-84 nonconference decision against Lehigh (2-5) Tuesday evening at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center.
Three players scored in double figures for San Francisco, with Candy Edokpaigbe registering a team-high 25 points. Along with Edokpaigbe's offensive performance, Mara Neira totaled 19 points while Sol Castro scored 14 off the bench in her season debut.
On the glass, Castro led the green and gold with eight rebounds, while Neira and Aina Cargol also guided the program, totaling six, respectively. The Dons' 11 offensive rebounds led to nine second-chance points, with Castro and Noelia Mouriño leading the team with three apiece.
Paula Tirado recorded three steals to lead San Francisco defensively, as the team forced 16 Lehigh turnovers. The Dons capitalized on the Mountain Hawks' mistakes, turning the turnovers into 20 points on the other end of the floor.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- After Lehigh scored the opening basket, San Francisco scored six straight points to gain a 6-2 advantage at the 8:36 mark of the first quarter. Neira led the charge throughout the run, knocking down back-to-back shots from distance.
- Going back and forth in the opening 10 minutes, Neira ended the period with a three-pointer to tie the game at 18. The green and gold relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 18 points.
- Responding in the second quarter, the Mountain Hawks jumped out to a 28-20 lead following a 9-2 scoring run, concluding at the 6:35 mark. The Dons answered with 13 straight points, regaining the lead at 33-28, with 2:01 left in the first half.
- Two late free throws for Lehigh trimmed San Francisco's advantage to four, 39-35, at the halftime break.
- Continuing to expand on the lead in the third quarter, the Dons pushed the margin to double digits, 63-53, following a Neira steal and score. Edokpaigbe gave the green and gold its largest lead of the game, 67-55, on the final basket of the third quarter, a fast-break layup with seven seconds remaining.
- San Francisco pushed the lead to as much as 21 in the final quarter of play as the team used a 12-3 scoring run for a 79-58 lead at 5:49. Four players scored throughout the run, with Castro capping it off with a floating jumper in the paint.
- Lehigh cut into its deficit in the back half of the period, outscoring San Francisco 29-22 in the final 10 minutes of action. Despite the comeback efforts by the Mountain Hawks, the Dons prevailed with a five-point victory, 89-84.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- For the third straight game, Edokpaigbe led the team in scoring with 25 points while shooting an impressive 78.6 percent (11-for-14) from the field. Her 11 made field goals mark a career-high as she surpassed the 20-point threshold in a game for the fourth time this season.
- After missing the majority of the 2024-25 season, Castro made her debut and recorded 14 points on six-of-nine shooting in 15 minutes off the bench. She also posted eight rebounds to lead the program.
- Neira broke out with a 19-point performance as she connected on five of her 12 attempts from beyond the three-point line.
- Totaling a career-high 10 assists, Aina Cargol became the first player this season to record double-digit assists in a game.
- As a team, San Francisco shot a season-best 55.4 percent (31-for-56) from the field, with four players shooting 50 percent or better throughout the contest.
