Dons, Mustangs Battle to Scoreless Draw

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Nationally ranked for the first time since 2018, No. 20 San Francisco (4-1-1) battled Cal Poly (1-3-1) in a back-and-forth affair on Thursday night as the Dons and Mustangs finished in a scoreless draw, 0-0, at Mustang Memorial Field.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:

  • San Francisco outshot Cal Poly 5-2 in the first half as defense was the theme of the match from the jump. Brayden Beason record the first shot on goal of the night for the green and gold at 15:12, but was ultimately denied by Mustang goalkeeper Nicky McCune.
  • In the second half, San Francisco held the edge in overall shots once again (7-6), but neither side could punch one home. Beason had a one-on-one opportunity after dancing through the Mustang defense at 87:01, but McCune turned away the forward to keep the match scoreless.
  • The two teams would continue to hold each other off the scoreboard in the final minutes as San Francisco picked up its first draw of the season on Thursday night, extending its unbeaten streak to four games.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:

  • Lucas Jones piled up four saves for the Dons out of eight total Mustangs shots.
  • San Francisco totaled two shots on goal - both coming from Beason (one in each half).
  • Mason Dougherty received his first start of the season on Thursday night, also marking his sixth appearance in six matches so far this year.

UP NEXT:
San Francisco will return home to the Hilltop for its final nonconference home match this upcoming Monday, Sept. 15 as the Dons are set to welcome Sacramento State.
