SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The University of San Francisco women's basketball team (9-5, 2-1) pulled out a hard-fought 59-55 victory at San Diego (6-10, 0-3) for its first WCC road win of the season Friday evening at Jenny Craig Pavilion.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- San Francisco jumped ahead early in the opening three minutes, gaining an 8-2 lead following baskets from Nataša Taušová and Candy Edokpaigbe. Taušová scored the game's first five points, knocking down a three-pointer and a driving layup to propel the green and gold early.
- The Dons continued to hold their advantage throughout the remainder of the first quarter and carried a 16-11 edge into the second quarter.
- The lead quickly ballooned to nine at the start of the second, with Taušová connecting on her second three-pointer to extend the lead to 20-11.
- Despite San Diego getting to within five, 24-19, with 4:09 left until halftime, Aina Cargol and Edokpaigbe knocked down back-to-back three-pointers to give San Francisco an 11-point advantage, 30-19, at the break.
- Maintaining its double-digit lead throughout the start of the third quarter, the green and gold pushed the margin to 14, 41-27, following a driving layup from Noelia Mouriño.
- The Toreros battled back and outscored the Dons 9-2 in the final four minutes to get within five, 43-38, entering the final quarter of play.
- In a back-and-forth final period, the Toreros trimmed their deficit to one, 56-55, with less than a minute remaining, but failed to convert on a free throw to tie the game.
- A Mara Niera two-point floater and a free throw by Mouriño in the final 30 seconds iced the game for the green and gold, securing the 59-55 victory.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- San Francisco had two players in double figures, led by Edokpaigbe, who totaled a team-high 17 points, while adding six rebounds and three blocks. Cargol added 12 points, four rebounds, and six assists.
- Mouriño nearly recorded a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds. She totaled all of her points in the second half and shot 66.7 percent (four-for-six) from the field in 27 minutes.
- Taušová finished the game with nine points and a career-best six rebounds.
- As a team, San Francisco outrebounded one of the best rebounding teams in the West Coast Conference, 41-32. Four players recorded five or more rebounds throughout the contest, with Mouriño leading with nine.
