Dons Outlast Lions, Earn Overtime Victory on the Road

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Aina Cargol connected on the game-tying three-pointer in the final seconds of regulation and as the University of San Francisco women's basketball team (10-5, 3-1) outlasted LMU (8-7, 2-2) 85-82 in overtime Sunday afternoon at Gersten Pavilion.
 
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:

  • Despite a slow start, falling behind by as much as seven, San Francisco trimmed its deficit in the final seconds to three, 20-17, at the end of the first quarter following a Paula Tirado driving layup with 30 seconds remaining.
  • The Dons continued to lose ground in the second quarter, falling behind by eight, 31-23, at the 2:56 mark of the period. Battling back, the team scored six of the final 10 points, capped off with a Mara Neira pull-up jumper to cut the margin to four, 35-31, at the halftime break.
  • A strong start to the third quarter gave San Francisco its first lead of the afternoon when Neira drained a straight-away three-pointer to give the Dons a 40-39 edge at 7:05.
  • Going back and forth in the final minutes of the quarter, the Dons used a 9-4 scoring run to take a 55-52 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
  • LMU overpowered the green and gold in the fourth quarter and took a seven-point lead, 71-64, at the 3:12 mark.
  • Trailing 74-71with 21 seconds left in regulation, Cargol connected on a wide-open three-pointer, tying the game and sending the contest into overtime.
  • In the final five minutes of play, the Dons outscored the Lions, 11-8, to prevail with the 85-82 victory. 
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Four players scored in double figures, with Neira leading the way with 19 points on 53.3 percent (eight-of-15) shooting. She also knocked down a game-high three three-pointers and added five rebounds.
  • Cargol and Candy Edokpaigbe totaled 17 points apiece and combined to shoot 81.3 percent from the free-throw line. Cargol led the team with eight assists, while Edokpaigbe, along with Nevaeh Ferrara Horne, paced the team defensively with two blocks.
  • As a team, San Francisco shot an impressive 52.5 percent (31-for-59) from the floor, the third-highest shooting percentage in a game this season.
  • The Dons dominated the paint, outscoring the Lions, 46-32.
  • Tirado led the second unit, scoring 11 of the team's 20 bench points. She connected on four of her six attempts from the field, including a three-pointer to put the Dons up four in overtime.
