Edokpaigbe Records Career-High 28 Points in Victory over Pepperdine

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Candy Edokpaigbe scored a career-high 28 points as the University of San Francisco women's basketball team (15-10, 8-6) defeated Pepperdine (15-11, 6-8) 81-70, in a West Coast Conference contest Saturday evening at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center.
 
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:

  • After falling behind 4-1, San Francisco went on a 7-0 run with 7:27 left in the first quarter, capped off with a driving layup from Edokpaigbe, to an 8-4 lead. Ending the opening quarter on a high note, Mara Neira knocked down a three-pointer, and Edokpaigbe added another layup to give the Dons a 17-10 lead at the end of the period.
  • San Francisco continued to build its lead at the start of the second quarter, pushing the margin to 17, 30-13, at the 6:37 mark, following a 13-3 scoring run. Pepperdine chipped away towards the end of the first half as the green and gold held a 32-23 lead heading into the halftime break.
  • The lead ballooned back to double digits with 18 seconds off the third-quarter clock as Edokpaigbe connected on a three-pointer to give San Francisco a 35-23 lead. Leading 46-38, later on in the quarter, the Dons went on a 7-0 scoring run, capped off with an Olivia Williams second-chance layup to increase the lead to 15, 53-38, at 5:06.
  • Despite a late push from the Waves at the end of the third quarter, the green and gold led 64-51 to begin the final quarter of play.
  • San Francisco kept its lead intact throughout the entire fourth quarter and pulled away late to earn the 81-70 victory. Pepperdine continued to battle, getting to within six, twice, halfway through the quarter.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Scoring 20+ points in a game for the ninth time this season, Edokpaigbe recorded a career-best 28 points on 76.9 percent (10-of-13) shooting, missing three total shot attempts. She also led the program at the free-throw line, knocking down six of her seven attempts from the charity stripe.
  • In 17 minutes off the bench, Sol Castro recorded a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double, her first of the season, and shot 57.1 percent (four-for-seven) from the field.
  • Aina Cargol and Neira recorded 11 points apiece and combined for six of the team's eight three-pointers. Along with her scoring, Cargol added eight assists and six rebounds.
  • As a team, San Francisco outpaced Pepperdine in rebounding (48-33), points in the paint (40-20), second-chance points (13-5), and fast break points (12-10).
